Usha and Jani met each other at a nightclub named Trincas in Kolkata. There she and her first husband Ramu became friends with Jani. One fine day Ramu was not present at the nightclub while Usha was performing in it, therefore, Jani offered her a ride home. In Vikas Kumar Jha's 2022 book The Queen of Indian Pop: The Authorised Biography of Usha Uthup, it is mentioned that the two did not talk to each other during their short ride. As Usha reached home, Ramu opened the door. He was in shock seeing Jani accompany his wife. The book mentioned Ramu's emtoions, "His face turned pale looking at Jani standing behind Usha." Ramu said in anger, "That's enough Mr. Uthup! You can go."

Usha couldn't understand Ramu's uneasiness. According to the book, Ramu "screamed and broke down" as he said, "Do you know what Jani Uthup told me this afternoon at the Chinese restaurant? He said, 'I don't know about Usha and her feelings, but I am in love with your wife.'" When Ramu asked his then-wife Usha whether she had any feelings for Jani, she confessed, "Yes," pushing aside her fear.
