Zakir Hussain started his musical career at the age of seven. When he was 12 years old, Zakir performed his first concert. Talking about his education, Zakir attended St. Michael's High School in Mahim. He did his graduation from St. Xavier's College, Mumbai.

Zakir Hussain gained worldwide recognition in the 1970s. Back in that time, Zakir reportedly did over 150 concerts every year. He played on George Harrison's 'Living in he Material World', John Handy's 'Hard Work' and Earth, Wind & Fire's 'Powerlight.' Later, he was invited by Mickey Hart to create a special album featuring all the renowned drummers named "Planet Drum." The first Plant Drum album even went to the Grammys in 1992. Zakir also co-founded the music supergroup "Tabla Beat Science."

Zakir Hussain married a Kathak dancer Antonia Minnecola. She was also the Tabla maestro's manager. They together had two daughters, Anisa Qureshi and Isabella Qureshi.

Zakir Hussain has received several awards and honours for his unique skill. He was awarded with the title of Padma Shri in 1988. In 2002, Zakir was honoured with Padma Bhushan and in 2023 he got Padma Vibhushan. Zakir was also presented with the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1990. In 2022, Zakir received Japan's highest private award, the Kyoto Prize, in Arts & Philosophy. In 2024, Zakir received 3 awards at the Grammys.
