Priyanka Chopra in Kalki 2: how Deepika Padukone exited the sequel
Deepika Padukone’s exit from the sequel was first revealed through an announcement on the film’s official X handle. The makers stated that after a long association during the first Kalki 2898 AD, both sides decided to move on before starting work on Kalki 2.
"This is to officially announce that @deepikapadukone will not be a part of the upcoming sequel of #Kalki2898AD. After careful consideration, We have decided to part ways. Despite the long journey of making the first film, we were unable to find a partnership. And a film like @Kalki2898AD deserves that commitment and much more. We wish her the best with her future works," it read.
Following that statement, a report from Bollywood Hungama claimed the Kalki 2 team let Deepika Padukone go after talks on fees and work hours stalled. The article said Deepika Padukone sought a 25 per cent hike and insisted on an eight-hour shooting day, which producers allegedly tried and failed to renegotiate.
Deepika Padukone later addressed the debate around working hours and pay while speaking to CNBC-TV18. "I have done this at many levels; this is not new to me. I think, even as far as pay is concerned, I have had to deal with whatever comes with it. I don't even know what to call it, but I am someone who has always fought my battles silently. And for some strange reason, sometimes they become public which is not the way I know and not the way I've been brought up. But yes, to fight my battles silently and in a dignified way is the way I know."
With Deepika Padukone officially out and rumours around Priyanka Chopra and other names continuing, Kalki 2’s final casting remains open. The producers have yet to issue any new update, leaving fans of Prabhas and the franchise waiting for a formal announcement on the lead actor.
