EXCLUSIVE Interview: Karan Oberoi On Going Solo For Chuppi, Turning Baddie For Screen & More

Karan Oberoi interview: 'The intimate connection with an audience is the ultimate reward for an artist', isn't it? Many wonderful artists have described this connection as the moment their work finally feels complete. At Filmibeat, we loved interacting with artists who have left a strong mark in their field with their exceptional work. As we caught up with the talented Karan B Oberoi to talk about his new song Chuppi, we couldn't help but notice the glee on his face.
Karan Oberoi is a proud member of India's OG boy band 'A Band of Boys', who took the audience on a roller coaster ride with his songs. As a millennial who has grooved to the hit pop anthems from their band, I got all nostalgic as we interacted.
In an exclusive conversation with Filmibeat Chief Copy Editor Abhishek Ranjit, Karan Oberoi spilled the beans on going solo for Chuppi, GenZ's love for his band, declining TV offers and how he would love to play a baddie on screen in a different avatar.
ON GOING SOLO WITH CHUPPI
"Everyone has been asking why I went solo? Is there a rift in A Band Of Boys? Absolutely not. One of the main reasons is that, as a band, we are very happy. I write as per the need of the band. So, it's a very high-energy dance, peppy dance song because we are an audio-visual band. So, we sing and dance. So, all my tracks are skewed and written towards, you know, towards ensuring that the band's sound stays the same and it works for all five of us. Whereas my own internal journey as a poet, as an author, as a writer has always been about soul music, has always been about poetry more than the music," Karan said as he bared his heart out on releasing his solo song Chuppi.
"I think in my solo avatar, I wanted to express myself or, you know, as a poet, as a songwriter about things that matter to me, about things that I want to say to the people. So, I could write my music around my own personality. So, that is the reason I wanted to go solo without breaking the band in any way," he added.
GOING BADDIE FOR A ROLE
When I asked Karan if he would love to go into full-blown baddie mode for a project, he reminded us about how he experimented as a script writer for ZEE5's Mukhbir.
"I did Mukhbir, as a story writer and actor, and the only reason I did it was because of the casting. I have put the show together as a story script writer. I acted also in the series, but had to edit as it was a very big role. As a maker, I had to cut it, because our length had increased a lot. According to the story, I had to ruthlessly edit and cut the part from the show," he said.
"But yes, I would love to do something that nobody is expecting me to do, I mean, other parts that I've done, roles that I've done, are the more romantic ones. I would love to do a hardcore villain's character, where I don't get to smile at all, where I can actually sink my teeth into it," the actor added.
Stay tuned for the second part of the interview, where he talked about returning to TV and GenZ's love for his band.
