Kiran Rao & Dia Mirza Celebrate As Humans In The Loop, Panha Join India’s Biggest Environmental Film Festival
The All Living Things Environmental Film Festival 2023 showcases 'Humans in the Loop' by Kiran Rao and 'Panha' featuring Dia Mirza, exploring the balance between tradition and technology.

The All Living Things Environmental Film Festival (ALT EFF) in India is set to feature two significant films this year. "Humans in the Loop," executive produced by Kiran Rao, and "Panha," a Marathi short film produced by One India Stories with Dia Mirza's involvement, will be showcased.
"Panha" explores the poignant tale of a boy from a village in Maharashtra. His family's mango farm is threatened by the construction of a bullet train. The film sensitively examines themes of development versus tradition, focusing on displacement and the enduring spirit of rural communities.
Exploring the Intersection of AI and Tradition
"Humans in the Loop," with Kiran Rao as executive producer, navigates the intriguing space between artificial intelligence and indigenous knowledge. The film follows an Adivasi woman working as an AI data labeler, raising important questions about the human cost of technological progress and the importance of traditional wisdom in today's digital age.
Anaka, the Programming Director and Co-founder of ALT EFF, expressed enthusiasm for these films. "At ALT EFF, we believe in showcasing stories that challenge, inspire, and provoke thought about the way we coexist with our environment. Both Panha and Humans in the Loop reflect the diversity of India's storytelling — one rooted in the soil of our villages, the other in the digital landscapes of the future, yet both carry the same urgent message of balance and empathy."
Championing Environmental Narratives
Actor and producer Dia Mirza, a strong advocate for sustainability, shared her thoughts on "Panha." "Panha is a story very close to my heart because it reflects what so many communities across India are experiencing, the delicate struggle between progress and preservation. I'm so grateful that ALT EFF is giving this story a platform to reach audiences who care about the world we are shaping for the next generation."
Filmmaker Kiran Rao, celebrated for her socially conscious storytelling, discussed the relevance of "Humans in the Loop." "This film speaks to the times we live in, where human intuition and indigenous wisdom are often overlooked in our race toward automation. It's a reminder that technology should serve humanity, not the other way around. I'm thrilled that ALT EFF, a festival that deeply values such conversations, is showcasing Humans in the Loop this year."
ALT EFF continues to be a beacon for films that ignite discussions on sustainability, biodiversity, and the planet's future. It connects filmmakers, activists, and audiences who are passionate about fostering positive change.
