Kiran Rao On Impact Of Her Divorce With Aamir Khan On Son Azad: We Took Our Time...

Kiran Rao opens up about her divorce from Aamir Khan, highlighting their focused approach to co-parenting their son, Azad. She emphasises the importance of maintaining a positive relationship post-separation.

Kiran Rao, in a heartfelt discussion with Filmfare, shared her insights on navigating through her divorce with Aamir Khan, emphasizing the well-being of their son, Azad. The couple, who tied the knot in 2005 and welcomed Azad in 2011 through surrogacy, chose to part ways in 2021. Despite their separation, they have maintained a harmonious relationship, focusing on co-parenting Azad. Rao revealed that their separation was a carefully considered decision, aimed at preserving the family's harmony and ensuring that Azad remains unaffected by their decision.

Rao articulated how the dissolution of their marriage was approached with a lot of thoughtfulness, likening it not to severing but gently unraveling a bond. This methodical approach was crucial in providing a sense of closure and strengthening the support system around their son. "We took our time and untied it gently. Hence, there was closure in some ways. There was also a sense of building the confidence of the family and Azad's support system, ensuring that he never feels the emotional repercussions of this," Rao explained, highlighting the importance of Azad's emotional well-being throughout the process.

Preserving a Bond Beyond Marriage

In her conversation, Rao also delved into the dynamics of their relationship post-divorce, underlining the sustained affection and respect they hold for each other. She pointed out that disagreements were part of their relationship, akin to any other, but they were always transient. "We would have arguments from time to time, but nothing that wouldn't be resolved within 12 hours. Those were the same kind of disagreements one might have with their parents," she stated, shedding light on their effort to maintain a positive environment.

Rao further elaborated on the enduring connection between her and Khan, describing him as a friend, teacher, and support system. Despite occasional frustrations, she emphasized the choice to focus on the positive aspects of their relationship. "He's my friend and, in many ways, my teacher. He's my support system and has always been that for me. But there are days when he infuriates me. In the end, it's about what you choose to hold on to: do you want to keep the bad vibes or what worked for many years? We chose to keep the best parts of our relationship and let go of what didn't work by getting divorced," Rao expressed, illustrating their decision to hold onto the love and friendship that brought them together in the first place.

The narrative shared by Rao offers a glimpse into the respectful and considerate manner in which she and Khan navigated their divorce, putting their son's emotional health at the forefront. It's a testament to the idea that relationships can evolve beyond traditional frameworks while still preserving love and respect for one another. Their story is not just one of ending a marriage but transforming their relationship into a different, yet equally loving, form.
