Mamta Kulkarni Opens Up On Mahamandleshwar Controversy; Says 'It Was In God's Hands'

Mamta Kulkarni, former Bollywood actress, transitions to a spiritual life as a Sadhvi after controversy at Maha Kumbh Mela. Despite challenges, she remains dedicated to her spiritual path.

Mamta Kulkarni, the erstwhile Bollywood star, recently found herself amidst a significant spiritual transition and subsequent controversy. After embracing a life dedicated to spirituality, she was honored with the title of Mahamandaleshwar at the Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj. However, this new chapter in her life was not without its challenges. Following a dispute involving high-ranking officials within the Kinnar Akhada, Mamta decided to step down from her position. Despite this setback, she remains committed to her spiritual journey, now choosing to walk the path as a Sadhvi, a female spiritual seeker.

This development marks a dramatic pivot from her previous life, where she was renowned for her roles in blockbuster films such as "Karan Arjun" and "Baazi" during the 1990s. By the early 2000s, Kulkarni had left the glamour of the film industry and India, seeking a more secluded and spiritual existence abroad. On January 24, during the sacred Maha Kumbh Mela, a festival celebrated every 12 years and considered one of the holiest gatherings for Hindus, she formally adopted a new spiritual identity as "Shri Yamai Mamta Nandgiri."

The controversy surrounding her appointment and subsequent resignation was first acknowledged publicly by Mamta in a conversation with ANI. She reflected on the divine providence that led her to be named Mahamandaleshwar on such a momentous occasion, attributing her ascension to the culmination of 25 years of devout spiritual practice. Despite the dispute that ensued with Acharya Mahamandaleshwar Laxmi Narayan Tripathi and the Akhada's founder, Rishi Ajay Das, over her new title, Mamta views her spiritual elevation as a blessing orchestrated by a higher power.

Speaking to ANI, she said, "...It was all in God's hands for me to become Mahamandaleshwar in that Kumbh, which was such a holy occasion in 140 years. God provided me with the fruits of 25 years of my 'tapasya'. So, that happened."

The contention over Kulkarni's anointment garnered criticism from several quarters, including prominent Yoga Guru Baba Ramdev. He expressed his disapproval by questioning the rapid conferment of sainthood, arguing that one cannot become a saint "in a single day." Baba Ramdev's criticism highlights a broader skepticism about the commercialization and dilution of spiritual titles in contemporary religious festivals like the Maha Kumbh, which he believes should remain untainted by allegations of vulgarity or improper conduct.

In response to the unfolding drama, Rishi Ajay Das made the decisive move to expel both Mamta Kulkarni and Acharya Mahamandaleshwar Lakshmi Narayan Tripathi from the Kinnar Akhada. According to a press release dated January 30, 2025, Das stated that Lakshmi Narayan Tripathi's removal as Acharya Mahamandaleshwar was immediate. He criticized Tripathi for straying from his duties, which were primarily aimed at fostering religious activities and supporting the transgender community.

Mamta Kulkarni's journey from the silver screen to a spiritual quest encapsulates a profound transformation. Despite the controversies and challenges she faced within the religious community, her resolve to pursue spiritual enlightenment remains undeterred. As she continues her path as a Sadhvi, Mamta's story serves as a testament to the complexities and conflicts that can arise when the worlds of religion, society, and personal belief intersect.
