As per reports, his wife Shashi Goswami had once received an acting offer in 1957 before they got married. When she asked him whether she should receive the offer, Kumar had apparently told her that only one of them should work in films. Later, Shashi had worked in some radio plays, as per IMDb.
Recalling their first meeting, the veteran actor had stated, as quoted by Bollywood Shaadis, "During my graduation days, I used to go to old Delhi to one of my friend's home for studying, and that's when I saw Shashi for the first time in my life. God's swear, I have never seen any girl with some bad intentions in my whole life, but there was something magical about Shashi that I couldn't take away my eyes from her face. And for one and a half years, both of us had seen each other from a distance. Because none of us had the courage to speak to the other at that time."

Talking about their dating days, Kumar had revealed that Shashi's mother and brother were against their relationship. He'd added, "After watching the film together with our friends, we had started meeting more frequently. While my parents had no objection against our relationship, it was Shashi's brother and mother, who were against us. I used to go to my college's terrace, and Shashi used to go to her house's terrace so that both of us can see each other from not getting caught by anyone."
"Not many people understand the true meaning of marriage as it's not about sticking to your partner for all the good things he/she has in them. But to adjust with some of their limitations too and to support them in their weak zones," he'd added.
During the same interview, Shashi Goswami had opened up on Manoj Kumar's link up rumours and the time when she'd doubt him. Explaining the situation, Goswami had stated, "I used to doubt him a lot of times, but he had always told me that going on the sets for the shooting is like going to temple for him. That place is like a temple for him. Also, he was aware of the things that I don't like and his limits too."
After tying the knot, the couple had welcomed tow sons - Vishal Goswami and Kunal Goswami.
