Meet This Actress Who Dared To Say No: We all are well aware of the bitter fact that actress needs to maintain a lot of their physical appearance in order to stay relevant in the industry. Nowadays showing skin in the film industry has become very common. But there was one actress who dared to say no to the directors who asked her for particular clothes. This actress is a well-known name in the film industry as she has worked in legendary movies like Kaagaz Ke Phool, Kala Bazar, Ek Phool Char Kaante and Chaudhvin Ka Chand. You must have guessed by now, she is our favorite Waheeda Rehman.
Waheeda Rehman was born in 1938 to a Deccani muslim family in Tamil Nadu. Rehman always dreaming of becoming a doctor but she abandoned her goals in order to help her family financially and accepted movie offers. However, she was the actress who dared to say 'NO' to the directors while working.
She always knew that looks mattered in her career but she was adamant towards exposing too much of her skin. She therefore carefully started selecting her costumes for the scenes. One such movie was Kala Bazar where the actress opened up about her discomfort. While starring opposite t Dev Anand, Rehman was to perform a scene where she had to disrobe her saree to make a rope out of it and save Dev Anand's character. Indian Express reports Rehman saying to director Vijay Anand, "Yeh toh main nahin karungi. Woh bhi outdoor mein!"
Later, Vijay taught the importance of that scene to Rehman as it was not about exposing skin on camera. On the other time, Rehman had an argument with Raj Khosla over a costume in the scene. Despite threats of ruining her career by the director, Rehman said no to wearing the particular costume and was helped in winning the argument by Dev Anand.
Rehman is often considered as "Beauty with Brain." She recalled a film where she had to perform a live-in relationship with Dev Anand on screen. Despite everyone asking the actress to not do so, Rehman said, "Us jamane me it was too bold of a subject....Maine kaha, '...Mujhe hamesha shaukh tha mai hat ke subject kru, nahi to wahi love story, ameer ladka ya ameer ladki ya gareeb ladka, gareeb ladki..."
Rehman has worked in many films, including Kabhie Kabhie, Chandni, Lamhe, Trishul, Mashaal, Namak Halaal, Delhi 6 and Rang De Basanti.
