On Valentine’s Day, Richa Chadha Announces A Brand New Love Story Titled Akhri Somvaar Starring Herself

Richa Chadha's new dramedy, Akhri Somvaar, reflects on love and societal pressures through a reality TV producer's journey. The narrative highlights dreams versus reality, crafted from Chadha's personal experiences.

During the second lockdown, as the world came to a halt, Richa Chadha embarked on a new journey beyond her acting career. She took to scriptwriting, crafting a story for a dramedy in which she will also play the leading role. The project, currently known as 'Akhri Somvaar', revolves around the life of a successful reality TV producer. This producer, spurred by a comment calling her a 'childless cat lady', finds herself in a race against time to find a life partner.

Richa Chadha's creation, 'Akhri Somvaar', draws heavily from her personal experiences growing up in a middle-class Punjabi family. She recalls the arranged marriages of her elder cousins and the societal pressures that followed. Chadha's narrative explores the struggle between maintaining professional aspirations and fulfilling personal desires. She believes her story will resonate with many, highlighting the often forgotten dreams as one gets caught up in the rat race of life. Chadha sees the film as a slice-of-life tale that not only deals with personal unraveling but also the joy of coming together.

"Aakhri Somwar", as described by Chadha, aims to explore themes of love, societal norms, and the extraordinary measures people take to achieve their dream weddings. Despite her enthusiasm for the project, Chadha remains secretive about the director chosen to bring this personal story to the screen. She emphasizes the need for family entertainment and believes her venture into comedy as an actor has been long overdue. Chadha also points out the commercial potential of the film, hinting at its appeal to a broad audience.

In her statement, Chadha expressed, "From my experiences of growing up in a middle-class Punjabi household, from my childhood, watching older cousins be set-up for arranged marriages, emerged this deeply personal story that I think a lot of families will resonate with. When we graduate from college, we are full of dreams and ambitions. Somehow those dreams get dulled when we enter the job market and before you know it, you're in your mid-30s hoping to have both a career and a husband/family but society thinks it's too late and you become jaded because the dreams are now not achievable. It is a slice-of-life story, about coming undone and coming together. I think there is currently a dearth of family entertainment. And I think as an actor, my comic timing has been greatly under-utilized. Speaking as a producer, it is a monetizable asset."

The film 'Akhri Somvaar' signifies not only a venture into new creative territories for Chadha but also a commentary on the complex interplay of professional success, personal fulfillment, and societal expectations. The anticipation around this project grows, as audiences look forward to a story that promises humor, warmth, and a reflection on life's intricate dances between dreams and reality.
