Oscar Nominations 2025: List Of Indian Films That May Get Nominated For 'Best Picture'

The 97 Oscars Award Ceremony is reaching us soon, and the list of nominations is about to be announced today. While most people expect to see primarily Hollywood films in the main categories, there are some Indian films that are still in a position to be part of the nominations for categories like 'Best Picture'. India had actually already sent in Kiran Rao's 'Laapataa Ladies' as their official entry for the Oscars, but unfortunately the film didn't make the cut for eligibility. Many other Indian movies, however, did make the cut and maybe we'll get to see them as part of the nominations tonight. Some of those movies are:
Girls Will Be Girls
Directed by first time director Shuchi Talati, 'Girls Will Be Girls' follows the story of an 18-year-old female student named Mira who studies in a strict boarding school nestled in the Himalayan foothills. There, she learnt about aspects of growing up like romance and falling in love, but is also confronted by her controlling mother who doesn't seem to understand what her daughter is going through.
Putul
Directed by Bengali director Indira Dhar Mukkherjee, 'Putul' follows the story of Sridebi, a homeless woman and the eldest of three daughters who is trying to survive the streets of Kolkata. The film depicts the plights of the homeless in India and the struggles they face like abuse by the public and criminal trafficking.
All We Imagine As Light
Directed by Payal Kapadia, the story follows several women and their own personal journeys that seem to intertwine due to their living conditions. Head-nurse Prabha is courted by a doctor while already being married to a man living in Germany. Anu tries her best to keep her romance with a Muslim man a secret from her family. Parvaty finds herself dealing with a sudden eviction from her apartment.
Aadujeevitham (The Goat Life)
Directed by Blessy, the film follows the story of an Indian man who goes to Saudi Arabia in search of a job. In his quest for work, however, most of his belongings are taken from him, and he is forced to work as a goat herder without pay. The film is based on a real life story and documents both how the man got into the situation and how he got out of it.
