Singer Sonu Nigam Slams Media Portal For Fake Quotes Amid Kannada Language Row: Done With Desperate...
Sonu Nigam recently condemned a news outlet for misattributing a controversial social media post to him, highlighting ongoing concerns over misinformation and identity theft. Despite his clarifications about an imposter account, the issue persists, raising questions about media accountability.

Sonu Nigam Controversy: Sonu Nigam, a well-known playback singer, recently criticised a prominent news portal for falsely attributing a controversial social media post to him. The post was actually made by an imposter account. On May 22, Sonu expressed his frustration on Instagram, accusing the media of spreading false information and misleading the public.
The controversy began with a post from an X account using Sonu Nigam's name. This user engaged in a heated exchange with BJP MP Tejasvi Surya over the Kannada language issue. Surya had criticised a State Bank of India manager in Karnataka for allegedly not speaking Kannada, stating that banks in Karnataka should serve customers in Kannada.
Imposter Account Sparks Confusion
The imposter account responded to Surya, challenging him to tell Kannada film stars not to dub or release their movies in Hindi across India. The news outlet mistakenly believed this post was from the singer and quoted him in their article, including his photo. This misrepresentation angered Sonu Nigam.
Sharing screenshots of both the viral post and the news article on Instagram, Sonu wrote, "Times of India, are you out of your mind? How many times have I declared I am not on Twitter? Spreading misinformation on my name is only going to poison the minds of people who have loved me so much all these years."
Repeated Clarifications Ignored
Sonu has repeatedly clarified that he is not active on X (formerly known as Twitter). In February 2025, he warned his followers about the imposter account and expressed concern over how easily people could be misled. In June 2024, he issued another clarification after the same user posted a sensational political remark.
Despite these warnings, the account remains active, raising concerns about identity misuse and online safety. The 'Abhi Mujh Mein Kahin' singer even threatened legal action against the user back then. However, no significant action has been taken to address this issue.
User's Defence Amidst Accusations
The user behind the imposter account stated that his real name is also 'Sonu Nigam'. He claimed it wasn't his fault if social media users confused him with the singer. In a lengthy social media post, he mentioned that accusations against him were 'unfair' and caused him 'distress'.
Sonu Nigam further added on Instagram: "Not everyone will have the sense to fact check you news. I'm truly done with this country's desperate and brutal media. Shame." His frustration highlights ongoing issues with misinformation and identity theft online.
This incident underscores the importance of verifying information before publication. It also raises questions about accountability for media outlets when they spread false information. As digital platforms continue to grow, ensuring accurate reporting becomes increasingly crucial.
