Sitaare Zameen Par: Aamir Khan Addresses Age Gap With Co-Star Genelia D'Souza; Says 'Age Is Not A Barrier'

Aamir Khan takes on the role of Genelia D'Souza's husband in Sitaare Zameen Par, a Hindi adaptation of Campeones. The film showcases age-gap casting and highlights advancements in technology, set to release in June 2025.

Aamir Khan is set to play Genelia D'Souza's husband in the forthcoming film, Sitaare Zameen Par. This casting choice has intrigued many, given Aamir's role in introducing Genelia to Bollywood in 2008. Back then, she starred opposite his nephew Imran Khan in the popular romantic comedy Jaane Tu… Ya Jaane Na.

Reflecting on this unique pairing, Aamir admits that the thought of their past connection did cross his mind. "Ya, I know. That thought did come to me," he shared with Indian Express. "But that was a long time ago. And ab Imran bhi kaafi meri age ka ho gaya hai (laughs)." Despite the unusual pairing, both actors are excited about their roles.

Age-Gap Casting and Modern Technology

Sitaare Zameen Par is a Hindi adaptation of the Spanish film Campeones from 2018. In this film, Aamir and Genelia portray characters in their early 40s. Although Aamir is now 60, he dismisses concerns about their age difference. He credits advancements in technology and changing audience perceptions for breaking traditional barriers around age-gap casting.

"We have the advantage of VFX now," Aamir explains. "Earlier, if I had to play an 18-year-old, I had to rely on prosthetics — like Anil Kapoor did in Eeshwar (1989), when he played an 80-year-old. Today, you can look 80 or 40 or 20 on screen with seamless visual effects. So age is no longer a barrier for actors" This technological progress allows actors to transcend age limitations on screen.

Aamir Khan's Return to Acting

Directed by R.S. Prasanna of Shubh Mangal Saavdhan fame, Sitaare Zameen Par marks Aamir's return to acting after several breaks. These breaks were partly due to the pandemic and also following the commercial failure of Laal Singh Chaddha. However, Aamir reveals that a compelling story always draws him back to acting.

"I have a compulsive streak," he says candidly. "If something enters my bloodstream, I can't stay away." This passion for storytelling is what fuels his return to cinema despite past setbacks.

An Unforeseen Onscreen Pairing

The film promises an emotional journey with Aamir and Genelia at its core—a pairing that no one anticipated but might pleasantly surprise audiences. Set for release in June 2025, Sitaare Zameen Par aims to captivate viewers with its heartfelt narrative and unexpected chemistry between its lead actors.
