Sonu Nigam To Face BAN from Kannada Films After Controversial Remarks At Bengaluru Concert?
Sonu Nigam’s remarks during a Bengaluru concert caused significant backlash from the Kannada community. Activists are demanding his ban from Kannada films until an apology is issued, highlighting issues of respect for regional languages.

Sonu Nigam Controversy: Following controversial comments made during a Bengaluru concert on April 27, a pro-Kannada faction has called for a total ban on playback singer Sonu Nigam from participating in Kannada films. Rupesh Rajanna, an activist of the 'Yuva Karnataka Vedike,' took the initiative to lodge a formal request with the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce (KFCC), urging them to exclude the singer from the state's cinema industry. This move comes as a response to Nigam's remarks, which sparked significant backlash from the local community.
The controversy ignited when Sonu Nigam, amidst his performance, lashed out at a fan for what he perceived as a rude demand to sing a Kannada song. Nigam equated the fan's mindset to that of terrorists involved in the Pahalgam attack, a comparison that quickly drew sharp criticism. His comments were widely denounced by the Kannada-speaking populace, who found them disrespectful to both the people of Karnataka and their language.
In light of these remarks, another Kannada group proceeded to file a complaint at the Avalahalli Police Station against Nigam, accusing him of making inappropriate and inflammatory statements. The activists have rallied for serious repercussions for the singer, demanding that he be prohibited from performing in Kannada films until he issues an official apology for his comments.
The Outcry and Demand for Action
The outcry against Nigam's comments has not only stirred the local film industry but also prompted calls for legal action. Rupesh Rajanna, along with other activists, has insisted on stringent measures against the singer, advocating for a firm stance from both the KFCC and law enforcement to ensure Nigam faces consequences for his actions.
The Karnataka Rakshana Vedike (KRV), another prominent group, escalated the issue by submitting a formal complaint to the Bengaluru police. The complaint letter, which News18 accessed, accused Nigam of drawing a parallel between the language struggle of Kannada and Kannadigas to terrorism and the tragic events in Pahalgam. It also suggested that Nigam's remarks were an attempt to stir discord among different linguistic groups.
Community's Reaction to Nigam's Comments
The comments made by Sonu Nigam at the concert, where he was interrupted by a student demanding a song in Kannada, have not only led to a formal police complaint but have also fueled widespread outrage across the Kannada community. Dharmaraj Gowda, KRV Bengaluru District President, in a conversation with News18, expressed that Nigam's statements deeply offended the Kannadiga community and risked inciting violence among the diverse linguistic communities in Karnataka.
The incident has triggered a strong response from various quarters, emphasizing the importance of respecting regional languages and sentiments. The demand for a ban on Sonu Nigam from Kannada films underscores the broader conversation about the respect and recognition of local cultures and languages in the entertainment industry.
As the controversy continues to unfold, the calls for Nigam to be held accountable for his comments reflect a broader issue of respect and understanding for linguistic diversity. The situation serves as a reminder of the impact that public figures can have on societal harmony and the importance of thoughtful communication.
