Sonu Nigam's Song Removed From Kannada Film Post 'Pahalgam' Remark During Bengaluru Concert
Sonu Nigam faced significant backlash after dismissing a request for a Kannada song at a Bengaluru concert. This incident resulted in the removal of his song from a Kannada film, reflecting the community's cultural sensitivities.

On April 25, during a concert in Bengaluru, Karnataka, Sonu Nigam sparked controversy, leading to backlash from the Kannada community. A video clip that circulated on social media showed the singer dismissing a student's request for a Kannada song and mentioning the Pahalgam attack, causing widespread offense. This incident led to Sonu Nigam's song being removed from the Kannada film "Kuladalli Keelyavudo," as reported by News18. The negative response from the Kannada film industry and the public prompted significant repercussions for the singer.
Following the uproar, the team behind "Kuladalli Keelyavudo" decided to disassociate with Nigam by removing his song from the film. In their press statement, they expressed their disappointment, stating, "There is no doubt that Sonu Nigam is a good singer. But, we are very upset by how he spoke about Kannada recently at a concert. We cannot tolerate the insult Sonu Nigam has done to Kannada, so we have removed the song." This decision reflects the broader sentiment among Kannadigas and the Kannada film industry's refusal to accept what they perceive as disrespect towards their language.
The fallout from the Bengaluru concert incident didn't stop with the removal of Sonu Nigam's song. The Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce (KFCC) advised its members to cease all collaborations with the singer. Subsequently, an FIR was filed against Nigam at Avalahalli Police Station in Bengaluru for his comments linking the song request to the Pahalgam attack. In response to the backlash, Nigam took to Instagram to express his regret over the incident, stating, "Sorry Karnataka. My love for you, is bigger than my ego. Love you always." This apology was an attempt to mend fences with the Kannada community and address the controversy head-on.
Despite the controversy, the song "Manasu Haadtade," which Nigam had sung for "Kuladalli Keelyavudo," continued to be available on his YouTube channel. It had garnered positive attention upon its release, with music composed by Manomurthy and lyrics by Yogaraj Bhat. However, the film's producers have now enlisted singer Chethan to re-record the song, further distancing themselves from Nigam. Producer Santosh Kumar also publicly declared his intention to avoid working with the singer in the future, highlighting the lasting impact of the incident on Nigam's professional relationships within the Kannada film industry.
The situation surrounding Sonu Nigam's performance and the subsequent removal of his song from a Kannada film underscores the complexities of linguistic pride and cultural sensitivities. It serves as a reminder of the influence public figures wield and the importance of respecting regional languages and sentiments. As the dust settles, both the singer and the Kannada film industry are likely to tread more cautiously to avoid similar controversies in the future.
