Yami Gautam On Gradual Evolution Of Women’s Roles On Screen: "We Want To Be More Important, And We Want..."

Yami Gautam is undoubtedly one of the most talented actresses in Bollywood, consistently delivering standout performances on screen. While she has portrayed several roles that reflect her strong persona, she brings yet another powerful character in her recently released film Haq. Inspired by true events, the film features Yami as Shazia, a woman who stands up for her rights and dignity after her husband divorces her by saying talaq thrice.
When asked whether she had ever faced moments where she had to fight for her own rights, Yami spoke about the broader changes she has witnessed in the film industry and the evolution of women's roles on screen over time.
The actress said, "I don't want to use the word fight. Change, especially in an industry like ours, takes generations. In interviews, I've seen some of the top actresses speak about how many of their roles were often ornamental. I am not talking about all the actresses, but it's very ornamental. But we want to do more in films, we want to be more important, and we want to be pivotal to the plot."
Yami continued, "If you see the change from then to now, then we cannot credit just one person. Every actress has a contribution to it. Whether it is Smita ji, Shabana Azmi ji or Nutan ji, in every generation there have been actresses who have joined this cause- standing for what you feel, your dignity an importance in the industry."
"Today, we're having larger conversations about these things, and that's a good thing. The kind of roles being written for women are evolving, and audiences are welcoming. Audience never discriminates. I feel like a small part of this ever-evolving phase of cinema," Yami concluded.
Apart from this, Yami is set to make a comeback with an exciting slate of films. With five projects lined up, it will be interesting to see what she has to offer the audience. Additionally, With Haq, she has proved herself yet again, solidifying her position at the top and reaffirming that she is the number one actress in Indian cinema. Period.
