Mumbai/New Delhi, 19th May 2026: Swarnjit Singh and Eclectic Films have launched the promo for their upcoming documentary film, "1947: Brexit India". Directed by Sanjivan Lal and narrated by Bollywood legend Boman Irani, the documentary offers a revisionist reframing of India's independence, examining the 338-year British presence not through the usual lens of politics but through a cold, hard economic lens.

1947 Brexit India Promo Out

The two-hour documentary traces the British journey from their arrival as traders in 1609 to their hasty departure in 1947. It addresses the startling paradox of how a tiny island nation with only 2% of the world's GDP managed to conquer a subcontinent that contributed 25% to the global economy, all while maintaining a population that never exceeded 0.05% of India's own. The film concludes that while for Indians it was a heroic independence, for the British, it was a strategic decolonisation, a multinational corporation exiting a market once the business of empire ceased to be profitable.

The film is written by the legendary Shama Zaidi, the acclaimed writer behind classics like Garam Hava and Shatranj Ke Khilari. This narrative is supported by deep insights from the prolific author and Member of Parliament, Mr. Shashi Tharoor; world-renowned historian William Dalrymple; security expert Commodore Uday Bhaskar; and celebrated political scientist Dr. Ishtiaq Ahmed, among other distinguished scholars.

Dr. Shashi Tharoor's reflections were that "The history of the British Raj is often presented as a civilising mission, but this documentary pulls back the curtain to reveal the raw commercial interests that truly drove the British Empire. It is a fascinating look at how their presence in India was about a calculated effort at economic extraction. Seeing this journey move from trade to a hurried, messy exit helps us truly understand the complexities of our past."

The documentary is the culmination of over a decade of intensive research by the film's producer and concept creator, Dr. Swarnjit Singh, a dedicated history buff. "I have lived with this subject for more than 10 years ". We wanted to answer the why and how of the British rule from a business point of view. They came as traders, evolved into a mafia-style control over Indian rulers, and finally quit when their business went bad following the financial ruin of World War II. This film is about the untold economic story that every Indian and student of history deserves to know," he said.

The film was an official selection at the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) 2023 and Mumbai International Film Festival (MIFF) 2024. Combining rare archival footage with rigorous academic analysis, the documentary promises to be a definitive record of the geopolitical shifts that birthed two nations. 1947: Brexit India is slated for a digital premiere soon on a major OTT platform, bringing this vital chapter of global history to a contemporary audience.
