25 Years Of Gadar | Is Gadar 3 In The Making? Director Anil Sharma Shares BIG Update: If I Get A...
Filmmaker Anil Sharma has confirmed that work on Gadar 3 is moving ahead. The update came as Gadar: Ek Prem Katha marked 25 years in 2026. Sharma said the team is developing the script. If plans stay on course, the film may begin shooting next year. The 2001 film remains one of Hindi cinema’s most discussed box-office stories. It starred Sunny Deol, Ameesha Patel, and Amrish Puri in key roles. Released on June 15, 2001, it clashed with Aamir Khan’s Lagaan: Once Upon a Time in India. Both films still found strong public support.

Gadar 3 update from Anil Sharma
Speaking to HT, Anil Sharma said the film still has deep public affection. He called that response a blessing after 25 years. Sharma said, “still alive in people's hearts”. He also recalled the first narration by writer Shaktimaan Talwar. The story made him confident about its scale.
Sharma said, “The day the film's writer, Shaktimaan Talwar, narrated the story, I knew it had the potential to become India's biggest hit film, and it did. Mother India (1957), Mughal-e-Azam (1960), and Sholay (1975) have been my favourite films, and I tried to make this on that level, and it made it to the top list. Besides blockbuster business, it got 10 crore footfalls, and no film has achieved that till date. Even Gadar 2 had half of this footfall,”
The director also addressed the future of the franchise through Gadar 3. He said viewers wanted Jeete’s story after Utkarsh Sharma grew older. Utkarsh Sharma, who is also Sharma’s son, played Jeete in the series. Yet the director said he needed a much stronger idea.
Sharma said, “After Utkarsh (Sharma, son-actor) grew up, people started saying bring Jeete’s story. But for me, if the Gadar story was a bomb, I would only make Gadar 2 if I got an atom bomb story, and it made history. Now, if I get a nuclear bomb story, then only I will make it. We are working on the script and, God willing, if all goes on track, we will start Gadar 3 next year!”
Gadar 3 talk revives the Lagaan clash memory
Sharma also revisited the famous box-office clash with Lagaan. He said the industry views such clashes differently now. In 2001, multiple big films could arrive together and still succeed. Audiences often watched more than one major release during the same cinema trip.
He said, “Today we discuss competing against Lagaan, but there was no competition! In those days, two-three big movies used to release together and work as well. The audience used to watch one show of this and another of that back-to-back. That was not an age of marketing, that was an age of the heart.”
Gadar: Ek Prem Katha was set during Partition and built around strong emotion. Sunny Deol played Tara Singh, a truck driver separated from Sakina. Ameesha Patel played Sakina, whose love story crossed the India-Pakistan border. The film mixed romance, family drama, action, and patriotic feeling.
Gadar 3 interest grows around a lasting franchise
The first Gadar found huge reach in smaller towns and single-screen cinemas. Sunny Deol’s screen presence helped make Tara Singh a popular figure. Songs such as Udja Kale Kawan also added to its lasting appeal. The film later became one of its era’s top Hindi grossers.
Its reported 10 crore footfalls remain central to Sharma’s view of its success. He said no film has matched that number till date. He also noted that Gadar 2 drew around half that audience count. Even so, Gadar 2 became a major box-office event in recent years.
The renewed Gadar 3 discussion comes while the first film completes 25 years. Sharma has not announced a final shooting date yet. The next step depends on the script meeting his expectations. For now, the franchise remains active, with work underway and a possible shoot next year.
