At the centre of 52 Blue is Ashish, played by Yadav Shashidhar, a young football lover from India. Ashish grows up on a remote island, where a controlling father shapes his isolated life. Guided quietly by his mother and memories of a late brother, Ashish dreams beyond the island.
As Ashish seeks escape, he travels abroad as a migrant worker linked to the FIFA World Cup in Qatar 2022. The journey also becomes a personal mission to meet idol Lionel Messi. Through this path, Ashish experiences the wider world for the first time, away from strict family control.
Neha Dhupia 52 Blue international film direction, Kochi shoot and production
52 Blue is directed by Egyptian filmmaker Ali El Arabi, who also produces the film. The project is mounted under his banner Ambient Light, which operates from Cairo and Los Angeles. Tariq Al-Naama serves as executive producer, while Krysanne Katsoolis, Joe Matthews and Katara Studios are listed as co-producers.
The film is shot extensively in Kochi, where coastal and island locations help build Ashish's confined world. These settings shape the atmosphere around the family and their emotional struggles. The production uses the landscape to show both isolation and hope, before the story moves towards Qatar and the World Cup stage.
The makers shared Neha Dhupia's first look and the trailer through digital platforms, highlighting the stripped-down performance. Viewers see Neha Dhupia without usual glamour, signalling a performance focused on inner conflict and quiet strength.
Discussing the experience of working on 52 Blue and exploring this intense role, Neha Dhupia reflected on how the project impacted Neha Dhupia's craft. Neha Dhupia described the script as deeply affecting and spoke about drawing on instinctive emotions. Neha Dhupia also addressed playing the mother of a grown-up son on screen.
"52 Blue has been one of the most deeply moving and transformative experiences of my career. When I first read the script, what stayed with me was the quiet strength of the mother she doesn't speak loudly, but her presence shapes her son's entire world. Playing a mother to a young man for the first time was both challenging and incredibly fulfilling, because it required me to tap into emotions that are raw, instinctive, and deeply human."
Neha Dhupia noted that the character demanded emotional honesty more than physical styling. The choice of a deglam presentation fit the story's grounded tone. Neha Dhupia saw the look as a chance to focus on the character's inner life rather than appearance.
Neha further adds, "The deglam aspect of the role was never a concern for me; in fact, it was liberating. It allowed me to completely shed any layers of vanity and immerse myself fully into the life of this woman—her silences, her resilience, and her unconditional love. There's something very powerful about portraying a character who finds strength in vulnerability."
Neha Dhupia also spoke about collaborating with director Ali El Arabi and working on location in Kochi. The filmmaker's style, according to Neha Dhupia, encouraged risk-taking and emotional depth. Neha Dhupia connected this approach with the universal themes behind Ashish's journey and the mother's belief in Ashish.
Neha continues, "Working with Ali El Arabi has been a revelation. His storytelling is so honest and rooted, and he creates an environment where you feel completely safe to explore and push your boundaries. Shooting in Kochi, in such a unique and intimate setting, added so much authenticity to the film. At its heart, 52 Blue is a story about dreams, about breaking free, and about the invisible forces like a mother's belief that shape who we become. I feel incredibly grateful to be a part of a film that is so universal in its emotions yet so personal in its storytelling. It's a story that I believe will resonate with audiences across cultures and borders."
With its mix of family drama, migrant experience and football fandom, 52 Blue presents Neha Dhupia in a different light for Indian viewers. The trailer and first look position the film as a character-driven story set around the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, with a strong focus on a mother's influence and a son's search for freedom.
