Anil Kapoor's Subedaar, Madhuri Dixit's Maa Behen- Which OTT Film Topped Most-Watch Original Films List?

Subedaar and Maa Behen have given Hindi streaming originals a notable breakthrough in Ormax Media’s list of the ten most-watched Hindi films on OTT in India for the first half of 2026. The two films are the only direct-to-digital originals on a chart otherwise led by titles that first played in cinemas before moving to streaming platforms.

Their presence on the list is significant because Hindi OTT viewing has increasingly been driven by theatrical hits, franchises and familiar intellectual property. In that landscape, two original films finding large audiences points to a continuing appetite for fresh stories when they are packaged with strong performances, clear genre appeal and accessible storytelling.

Subedaar and Maa Behen stand out among OTT originals

Both films were directed by Suresh Triveni, making the achievement more striking. Subedaar, an intense action drama, and Maa Behen, a crime comedy with a social message, sit at opposite ends of the tonal spectrum. Their success underlines Triveni’s range as a filmmaker and his ability to build mainstream interest around character-led narratives.

Producer Vikram Malhotra backed both projects through Abundantia Entertainment. For Subedaar, the banner partnered with Suresh Triveni, Opening Image and Anil Kapoor Film & Communication Network. Maa Behen also brought Malhotra and Triveni together, strengthening a creative association that has delivered some of the company’s most discussed streaming titles.

The two films also travelled beyond the Indian market. Subedaar became the most-watched Indian Amazon Original film in its opening weekend and entered the platform’s Top 10 list across 31 countries. Maa Behen reached the number two position globally among non-English films on Netflix and trended in 15 countries.

The performance of Subedaar and Maa Behen comes at a time when platforms are balancing star-led theatrical acquisitions with original films made for home viewing. For producers, the result reinforces the value of distinctive concepts that do not rely only on existing franchises or sequel recognition.

Abundantia Entertainment has previously backed films such as Shakuntala Devi, Sherni, Jalsa, Airlift, Toilet – Ek Prem Katha and the Chhorii franchise. The latest Ormax recognition adds to that slate by showing that original Hindi films can still cut through crowded OTT menus when the story, positioning and platform reach align.
