Awarapan 2: Vishesh Bhatt Welcomes Shabana Azmi As Nafisa On Her 75th Birthday; Pens Sweet Note For Her

Awarapan 2 grows in scale as producer Vishesh Bhatt confirms Shabana Azmi has joined the cast. The National Award-winning actor plays the main antagonist, a first in the long career. Her entry as Nafisa reshapes the crime drama and places the sequel under close watch.

Shabana Azmi has acted in more than 150 films across over fifty years, yet negative parts have been rare. Awarapan 2 gives Shabana Azmi the first full-fledged antagonist of the career, designed to challenge Shivam and overturn the world built in the earlier film.

The road to casting Shabana Azmi began with writer Bilal Siddiqui, who built Nafisa from the inside. Bilal Siddiqui imagined a calm but commanding figure within the criminal ecosystem. This presence enters Awarapan 2 and sends the plot in an unexpected direction that disrupts Shivam.

Bilal Siddiqui then worked on the psychology of Nafisa, emphasising danger and emotional weight over spectacle. Every choice was tied to how the character would unsettle Shivam’s life. The menace had to feel precise, so the writing focuses on careful detail rather than broad strokes.

What Nafisa should look and sound like remained open while early drafts moved ahead. Vishesh Bhatt saw a gap and felt that placing a woman inside Shivam’s violent orbit would shift the moral tone. Once that decision landed, the role sharpened and the name Nafisa followed naturally.

For Vishesh Bhatt, there was only one person suited to embody this shift. The Bhatt family and Shabana Azmi have shared decades of work, conversations and close personal ties. Shabana Azmi has also been present through Vishesh Bhatt’s childhood, influencing taste and stories within the home.

The timing of the casting added another layer to the collaboration. Shabana Azmi officially joined Awarapan 2 on 18 September 2025, which is the birthday of Shabana Azmi. From that day, Nafisa’s position, strength and emotional charge within the film’s structure became fixed for the team.

Producer Vishesh Bhatt said, "Nafisa could only ever be Shabana ji. She brings to this role an impact, a power and a presence that are entirely her own. She came home on her birthday, and everything found its place."
