Dhurandhar 2 Script Dispute: Bombay HC Urges Amicable Resolution In Aditya Dhar Defamation Suit - UPDATE
The Bombay High Court urged Aditya Dhar and Santosh Kumar to resolve the Dhurandhar 2 defamation dispute without escalation, highlighting civil remedies for authorship and copyright claims and noting an upcoming hearing on April 30.
Dhurandhar 2 Script Dispute: The Bombay High Court has urged writer-director Aditya Dhar and writer-filmmaker Santosh Kumar to end their dispute over the film “Dhurandhar 2 – The Revenge” without intensifying the defamation case. Justice Arif Doctor indicated that the disagreement over the script should be settled calmly rather than through prolonged confrontation.

During the hearing, Justice Arif Doctor remarked that disputes of this nature should not turn hostile. The judge stated, “A matter like this should be resolved. It doesn't need to escalate into a fight for defamation,” and observed that the disagreement could likely be reduced through dialogue and proper legal steps.
Bombay High Court defamation suit: allegations on “Dhurandhar 2 – The Revenge” script
The defamation suit arises from public comments by Santosh Kumar, who alleged that the script of “Dhurandhar 2 – The Revenge” was plagiarised from Kumar’s earlier work. Kumar has claimed that the film’s story mirrors a script written earlier. Aditya Dhar has rejected these accusations and described the statements as defamatory.
Bombay High Court defamation suit: civil remedies and legal channels
The Court underlined that if Santosh Kumar believed copying had taken place, civil remedies were available. The judge noted that such claims should be raised before appropriate forums instead of being aired through media statements. The Court emphasised that legal mechanisms exist for asserting copyright or authorship without resorting to public allegations.
Kumar’s advocate informed the Bench that Kumar’s concern centred on recognition as the story’s author. The Court acknowledged that Kumar could claim authorship, but indicated this must happen through lawful procedures. Senior Advocate Birendra Saraf, representing Dhar, argued that any assertion by Kumar should be confined to proceedings and not be repeated in public.
According to the suit, Santosh Kumar has alleged that the film’s script was taken from Kumar’s work titled “D Saheb”. Dhar has continued to deny plagiarism, maintaining that the claims are baseless and have damaged Dhar’s standing in the film industry. Dhar approached the High Court seeking both an injunction and monetary damages.
Bombay High Court defamation suit: orders passed and next hearing
The case record shows that Dhar first issued a legal notice refuting Kumar’s plagiarism charges. Dhar then filed the present suit after allegedly receiving no response. On April 8, the Bombay High Court restrained Santosh Kumar from repeating the statements that Dhar has challenged as defamatory, giving temporary protection to Dhar’s reputation.
The Court expressed hope that the conflict could be settled at the next date of hearing. Kumar’s counsel said fresh instructions would be sought regarding the Court’s suggestion that media comments should stop. The matter has been listed for further hearing on April 30, when the Court may assess whether the dispute can be closed.
