At a young age, he has achieved what many dream of. Prabhanjan performs in Hindi, Kannada, and Punjabi, adding a modern twist to each language. In an exclusive conversation with Filmibeat Chief Copy Editor Abhishek Ranjit, the talented artist got candid about his journey, revealing that he missed an exam to attend Arijit Singh's concert. Guess what? That day really changed his life.

Here are excerpts from the interview-

1- Your name is unique. What's the meaning of it?

It basically means Vayu. And I come from a South Indian family; it's a South Indian name. So, it's not too common in our place.

2- I got to know you are a polyglot. What are the languages that you speak? For now, these are the languages that I can speak.

For now, I can speak Hindi, Punjabi, Kannada and English. I also know a little bit of Marathi. I am not really familiar with that language, but I have sung a couple of songs in it.

3- Who was your source of inspiration? Did your family motivate you to take up Hindustani classical music?

No, not really. As I told you, I come from a South Indian family. Everybody is mostly an engineer and doctor in my maternal and paternal sides. When we moved to Delhi, I wasn't supposed to end up in music anyhow.

So, eventually, there was this thing when I was 15 or 16, when I was in 8th class, I guess. My school made it mandatory for students to choose between sports and music. And I chose music. Eventually, I just fell in love with music. I started with learning guitar initially. And then it got into me and I started learning Hindustani classical music.

Since I was living in Delhi, I knew some people who were familiar with that side of Hindustani classical music. So, if I chose to pursue music, if I were in Bangalore, I would have definitely gone for Carnatic music. Because that's more popular on the south side.

I got into learning Hindustani classical music. I used to play guitar, and everybody used to say, "You should sing."

I went to a concert in Leisure Valley in 2014 or 2015. That was a concert where Arijit Singh was performing. I went to that concert, but missed my exams. And that day really moved me. I knew that I had to do something like this. 15-20 thousand people are coming to watch an artist. Music is a thing that connects everyone. No matter what you think, no matter what you feel, it just connects you. So, yeah, something moved me, something inspired me that day.

4- How easy or difficult was it for you to convince your parents and family members?

It was difficult initially because I had no roots in music. And people who generally have a family background of music, they only pursue this kind of degree or academic thing in music. I just went and appeared for an entrance exam that is conducted for this particular degree.

I don't know how I cleared it. I was very prepared for it. And that was a kind of risk that I took. I convinced my family that if I get into this college, I will pursue music and I will study it academically. My parents always wanted a backup plan or something related to academics that has the faith support. So I convinced them that I will do this, and I will study hard in music itself.
