From Suriya To Salman Khan: Is The Shelved Epic Karna Finally Getting A New Lease Of Life? Here's What We Know
Salman Khan’s next big-screen move has become the centre of fresh industry chatter, with a new report linking him to a large-scale period drama that may revive Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra’s long-discussed Karna. The project, once expected to introduce Suriya to Hindi cinema, was reportedly put aside during pre-production because of its heavy budget.

The latest buzz suggests that Mehra may revisit the mythological subject with Salman in the lead. However, there has been no official announcement from the actor, the filmmaker or the reported production partners. At this stage, the development remains in early discussion, not a confirmed film on Salman Khan’s slate.
Why Salman Khan and Karna are being discussed
Karna has remained one of the more talked-about shelved projects in recent Hindi film circles because of the names attached to it. Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra, known for Rang De Basanti and Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, was reportedly developing the film as a grand mythological drama. Suriya was said to be attached to the project, which would have marked his Bollywood debut.
According to earlier reports, the film did not move ahead after the planning stage due to budget-related issues. Mythological and period films require extensive pre-visualisation, elaborate sets, VFX, costumes and long production schedules. For a film based on Karna, the scale would likely be much larger than a conventional star vehicle.
The renewed speculation gained attention after 123 Telugu claimed that Salman Khan and Farhan Akhtar had been discussing a possible collaboration. The project being discussed is said to be a massive period action drama, planned across two films. Some industry chatter has connected this with Mehra’s Karna, though that link has not been formally confirmed.
What has been reported so far
A report quoted a source as saying that Salman Khan and Farhan Akhtar had been meeting regularly over the past month to discuss a potential film. The source claimed that Salman liked what he had heard and showed interest in the idea. The discussions, however, were described as early-stage and not yet at the paperwork level.
The same report described the film as a grand period action drama designed to unfold across two parts. If the film does move forward, it would bring Salman and Farhan together in a major collaboration for the first time. It would also give Salman a different canvas after years of action entertainers and mass-market commercial dramas.
Excel Entertainment, led by Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani, has backed several mainstream and high-concept Hindi films. A two-part mythological or period spectacle would be a major expansion in scale. Still, until the makers issue a formal statement, the project should be viewed as a developing possibility rather than a greenlit production.
Why Karna remains a major screen subject
Karna is among the most compelling figures from the Mahabharata. His story carries themes of identity, loyalty, social rejection, friendship, honour and tragedy. These elements make him a powerful character for cinema, especially when told through a modern dramatic lens. That emotional weight is one reason filmmakers have repeatedly returned to the idea.
For a star like Salman Khan, the role could offer both physicality and emotional conflict. Karna is not a simple heroic figure. He is a warrior shaped by abandonment, humiliation and allegiance. A serious adaptation would need more than spectacle. It would need a strong screenplay that balances mythology, character drama and audience expectations.
Indian cinema is also in a phase where large-format stories from history, folklore and mythology are drawing strong curiosity. Films with cultural familiarity and visual ambition often travel beyond one language market. A Karna film, if mounted carefully, could aim for a pan-India audience across Hindi, Tamil, Telugu and other dubbed versions.
What it means for Suriya’s earlier Bollywood debut plan
The original excitement around Karna came partly from Suriya’s reported involvement. The Tamil star has a strong following across South India and has earned wider recognition among Hindi-speaking viewers through dubbed films and streaming releases. A Mehra-directed mythological drama would have been a significant Hindi cinema launch for him.
If the project is revived with Salman Khan, it would mark a major change in casting and market positioning. It is not yet clear whether the new reported film is the same Karna concept, a reworked version, or a separate period drama being linked to the earlier project by industry speculation. That distinction matters until the makers clarify the plan.
Such shifts are common in large films that spend years in development. Scripts are revised, budgets are recalculated and casting choices change depending on availability, market conditions and producer confidence. A shelved film returning in a new form does not always mean the earlier version is being made exactly as planned.
Salman Khan’s packed upcoming slate
The speculation also arrives at a time when Salman’s upcoming films are being closely watched. He has been linked to a superhero comedy with Raj and DK, the filmmaker duo known for blending humour, action and unusual genre ideas. Reports have suggested that the period drama, if finalised, may come after that project.
Salman was also seen at an event marking 25 years of Lagaan, where his changed appearance drew attention. His buzz-cut hairstyle, light stubble and visibly fitter look led fans to wonder if it was connected to one of his upcoming films, including the project with director Vamshi Paidipally, popularly referred to as SVC63.
For now, Karna remains an exciting but unconfirmed possibility. The combination of Salman Khan, Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra, Farhan Akhtar and a two-part period spectacle is enough to create attention. But the real picture will become clear only when the film reaches a formal announcement, casting confirmation and production timeline.
