“I Wasn’t Baited, I Was Dragged”: Ira Khan On Family, Fitness And Why The Tata Mumbai Marathon Became Personal

Mumbai, January 13, 2026: Mental health advocate Ira Khan spoke candidly about family, fitness and the emotional realities of showing up, as she reflected on how the Tata Mumbai Marathon became a deeply personal journey for her and her family.

Ira Khan On Family Fitness And Why The Tata Mumbai Marathon

Speaking at a pre-event press conference held by Tata Mumbai Marathon to honour a select list of fundraisers for this year's marathon, Ira addressed the challenges of conversations around mental well-being and why platforms that combine community participation with awareness are critical.

"I'm very much for physical fitness. It's very connected to your mental health. That doesn't need explaining or proving," she said, adding that her association with the marathon spans several years, including turning up early in the morning to cheer participants.

Recalling how the idea of running together as a family took shape, Ira admitted it was not without hesitation. "I wasn't baited into doing the Talent Home Run. There was cribbing, complaining and questions like, 'What happens if I don't finish?"

The shift came when she saw the marathon's inclusive race categories and the concept of families participating together. "I went on stage, saw all the categories and thought, fine, do it. First you walk. It's okay."

With different family members leading different foundations, the marathon became a shared commitment rather than a symbolic appearance. "We support each other's causes in different ways. What we love about the marathon is how genuine it is."

Beyond the run, Ira highlighted initiatives aimed at making fitness and mental health more accessible. She spoke about sessions designed for those intimidated by fitness and announced her own session on navigating loneliness.

"The statistics on loneliness are very scary right now. Chronic loneliness impacts longevity as much as smoking five cigarettes a day," she said.

Emphasising small, everyday actions, Ira concluded, "It's about baby steps. Connecting with people, with art, with the body, and taking the time to begin."

The 21st Edition of The Tata Mumbai Marathon will be held on Sunday, 18th January, 2026.
