Imtiaz Ali Recalls Jaideep Ahlawat’s Early Days: A Journey of Grit, Talent, and Natural Intensity!

It's not every day that a filmmaker revisits a decade-old film to highlight a minor character, but when it comes to Jaideep Ahlawat, the impact is undeniable. At a recent fan meet for the cult classic Rockstar, director Imtiaz Ali took a trip down memory lane, sharing a fascinating anecdote about Jaideep's role as Jordan's (Ranbir Kapoor) stern elder brother.

Imtiaz Ali Recalls Jaideep Ahlawat s Early Days

Imtiaz recalled a pivotal moment during the shoot that showcased Ranbir Kapoor's dedication and Jaideep's natural intensity. He recalled, "Ranbir came up on the day of the shoot and only wanted to know who his character's elder brother was," Imtiaz shared. "He saw Jaideep and told me, 'You had cast a strong man as my brother.' Ranbir then went up to Jaideep and specifically asked him to hit him hard so his performance would look natural."

The director laughed as he remembered how the duo went through 3 or 4 takes of the physical confrontation. Imtiaz noted that one of Ranbir's best reactions in the film was actually the result of receiving those genuine, stinging slaps from Jaideep.

Imtiaz pointed out a reality of the time: back when Rockstar was released in 2011, Jaideep Ahlawat was not a big name. He was a fresh face from FTII, holding his own against a rising superstar. Fast forward to today, and the landscape has changed entirely. The director didn't just look back; he also praised Jaideep's evolution, specifically mentioning his recent performance in the film Ikkis. It serves as a testament to Jaideep's longevity and his ability to command the screen, whether in a brief cameo or a leading role.

Since his days as the "strong man" in Rockstar, Jaideep Ahlawat has become a household name, peaking with his iconic role in Paatal Lok, which earned him two Filmfare OTT Awards for Best Actor. His acclaimed versatility across hits like Raazi, Gangs of Wasseypur, and Jaane Jaan has secured him further honours, including Filmfare's Best Actor (Critics) and Best Supporting Actor for Maharaj. From gritty dramas to recent successes like An Action Hero and Ikkis, Jaideep masterfully balances commercial appeal with an intense, grounded craft.
