K Bhagyaraj Death: Anil Kapoor Mourns Legendary Filmmaker's Demise; Says 'It Feels Unreal'

Anil Kapoor has remembered K Bhagyaraj as one of the quiet creative forces behind several major Hindi films, saying the late Tamil filmmaker’s stories helped shape important milestones in his own career. Kapoor’s tribute came after Bhagyaraj died on June 27, 2026, following a heart attack, leaving colleagues across Indian cinema in shock.

The actor said the loss felt difficult to process because he had met Bhagyaraj only days earlier at the wedding of Khushbu Sundar’s daughter. In a note shared on X, Kapoor recalled spending time with him at the ceremony and described the meeting as especially poignant in hindsight.

Kapoor wrote, “Deeply saddened and shocked by the passing of K. Bhagyaraj sir. It feels especially unreal because I had the opportunity to meet him recently at Khushbu’s daughter’s wedding and spend some time with him.” His post reflected both personal grief and professional gratitude for a filmmaker whose work travelled widely across languages.

Calling Bhagyaraj a “creative genius”, Kapoor said his contribution to Indian cinema was larger than many viewers may realise. He pointed out that several stories created by Bhagyaraj were later adapted into successful Hindi films, including projects that became career-defining for actors, directors and producers in Mumbai.

Kapoor wrote, “Bhagyaraj sir was a creative genius whose contributions to Indian cinema go far beyond what many people know. He was the original creator behind stories that went on to become landmark Hindi films and career-defining milestones for so many of us.”

One of the most important examples, Kapoor said, was Woh Saat Din, the 1983 Hindi film that played a crucial role in establishing him as a leading man. The film, directed by Bapu and produced by Boney Kapoor, was adapted from Bhagyaraj’s work. For Kapoor, its emotional core and rooted storytelling became a turning point.

From Woh Saat Din to Beta, the stories that travelled

Kapoor also credited Bhagyaraj for Mohabbat, noting that its story, screenplay and dialogues came from the filmmaker. The 1985 film, starring Kapoor and Vijayta Pandit, was also significant because it helped begin the producing journey of Indra Kumar and Ashok Thakeria through Maruti International.

In his tribute, Kapoor said, “Woh Saat Din, adapted from his work, became one of the most important films of my career. Mohabbat, with its story, screenplay, and dialogues by Bhagyaraj sir, not only gave us a memorable film but also helped launch the journey of Indra Kumar and Ashok Thakeria as producers through Maruti International.”

He then mentioned Beta, another film linked to Bhagyaraj’s writing. Released in 1992, the Indra Kumar directorial starred Anil Kapoor and Madhuri Dixit and became one of the biggest Hindi hits of its time. Kapoor said he and Boney Kapoor had acquired the rights and later passed them on to Indra Kumar and Ashok Thakeria during a challenging period for them.

“Later, Beta, another adaptation of his brilliant writing, became a blockbuster and remains one of the defining films of its era. Boney and I had acquired the rights and passed them on to Indra Kumar and Ashok Thakeria during a difficult phase in their journey,” Kapoor wrote.

He added that the film’s success brought “tremendous recognition” to everyone associated with it. Beta became especially memorable for its dramatic family conflict, popular music and the pairing of Kapoor and Madhuri, whose performance in the film remains among her most discussed commercial roles.

K Bhagyaraj’s reach beyond Tamil cinema

Bhagyaraj was widely respected in Tamil cinema as a writer, director and actor with a sharp understanding of middle-class humour, family drama and emotional conflict. His films often combined everyday situations with strong narrative twists, making them attractive for remakes and adaptations in other Indian languages.

Kapoor’s note also underlined how Bhagyaraj’s storytelling continued to influence Hindi cinema beyond the 1980s and 1990s. He cited Mujhse Shaadi Karogi, the 2004 comedy directed by David Dhawan and produced by Sajid Nadiadwala, as another example of Bhagyaraj’s enduring creative footprint.

The film starred Salman Khan, Akshay Kumar and Priyanka Chopra, and became one of the most successful mainstream comedies of its year. Kapoor noted that the story and screenplay were by Bhagyaraj and were adapted into Hindi by Anees Bazmee.

Kapoor wrote, “Another remarkable example of Bhagyaraj sir’s brilliance was Mujhse Shaadi Karogi. Directed by David Dhawan, produced by Sajid Nadiadwala, and starring Salman Khan, Akshay Kumar, and Priyanka Chopra, the film’s story and screenplay were by Bhagyaraj sir and adapted into Hindi by Anees Bazmee.”

He added that the film became a major success and marked another important milestone in Akshay Kumar’s career. The mention placed Bhagyaraj’s legacy within a wider Hindi film history, where southern stories and writers have often shaped major commercial entertainers.

Several members of the film industry mourned Bhagyaraj after news of his death emerged. His final public appearance at Khushbu Sundar’s family wedding also drew attention, with clips from the event circulating online after his passing. For many colleagues, the suddenness of his death made the loss more painful.

Kapoor ended his tribute by saying he would always remain grateful for what Bhagyaraj contributed to his career and to Indian cinema. “His legacy will live on through the stories he created and the countless people he inspired,” he wrote, offering condolences to the filmmaker’s family, friends and loved ones.
