Kajol Reveals Why She Broke Her No-Kissing Rule After 30 Years For The Trial: I Was Uncomfortable...

Kajol explains the on screen kiss in The Trial Pyaar Kaanoon Dhokha, detailing how the moment serves the character’s arc and requires professional judgement. She discusses filming dynamics, the scene’s significance to the plot, and how personal comfort interacted with storytelling in this OTT debut.

Kajol has finally opened up about breaking a long-held no-kissing rule for The Trial - Pyaar, Kaanoon, Dhokha. Speaking on Lilly Singh’s podcast, Kajol explained why the scene stayed in the script and how it linked closely to the story.

Kajol recalled that the decision did not come easily. The actor said the idea felt fine during planning, yet became daunting on the actual shoot day. Kajol shared that there was a moment when cancelling the scene seemed like a real option.

When Lilly asked if personal growth made Kajol more open to the kiss, the actor stressed professionalism. Kajol said, "I think I was uncomfortable with it. I was very, very uncomfortable with the idea till I was standing on set. I liked it in theory and wasn't sure whether I was actually going to do it or tell them, 'Cut! This is not happening!' But, I really think it was simply that, it was simply a professional call where I felt that I can make this call today."

The kiss appears in The Trial - Pyaar, Kaanoon, Dhokha, which marked Kajol’s OTT debut in 2023. In the courtroom drama, Kajol shares the screen with Jisshu Sengupta, and the two perform the much-discussed kissing scene that broke the actor’s long-standing boundary.

Kajol and the character journey in The Trial - Pyaar Kaanoon Dhokha

During the podcast, Kajol described how the moment was designed around the inner life of her character. She said, "Honestly, it was the season that I was playing. It had so much to do with the character and who she was. It wasn't simply a kiss; it was about what she thought and what she wanted to happen and what didn't happen for her. What she believed, what she had faith in. What she couldn't have faith in. It was something that was an integral part of the entire screenplay, so I couldn't have cut that out without cutting an integral part of the entire character."

Kajol plays Noyonika Sengupta, a homemaker who returns to law practice after her husband’s scandal. The Trial - Pyaar, Kaanoon, Dhokha is directed by Suparn Verma and adapts the American series The Good Wife for an Indian setting.

The series features a strong ensemble alongside Kajol. Alyy Khan and Sheeba Chaddha play key roles in the legal drama, which streams on JioHotstar. Season 2 of The Trial - Pyaar, Kaanoon, Dhokha released in 2023, continuing Noyonika’s professional and personal challenges.

Kajol also reflected on how personal choices shaped the career journey that led to The Trial - Pyaar, Kaanoon, Dhokha. The actor said that early in the profession, decisions came from instinct, with little overthinking, and that this straightforward approach sometimes caused trouble but kept the focus on work.

Across three decades in Hindi cinema, Kajol has starred in films such as Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, Kabhie Khushie Kabhie Gham, and Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. The decision to approach a kiss on screen as a professional requirement in The Trial - Pyaar, Kaanoon, Dhokha reflects how Kajol now balances comfort, craft, and character.
