Anupam Kher Cheers With Pride As His Directorial Tanvi The Great Officially Enters Oscars 2026 Race: Huge Win
The 98th Academy Awards confirms 201 films eligible for Best Picture, including Indian titles such as Tanvi the Great, Kantara: A Legend Chapter 1, Tourist Family and Sister Midnight, with rules detailing commercial release and runtime requirements.
317 feature films are now confirmed as eligible for the 98th Academy Awards, with 201 in contention for Best Picture. The Oscars list also features Indian projects such as Rishab Shetty's Kantara: A Legend – Chapter 1, Anupam Kher's Tanvi the Great, Tourist Family, Mahavatar Narsimha and Radhika Apte-led Sister Midnight.

Tanvi the Great is directed by Anupam Kher, while Kantara: A Legend – Chapter 1 is helmed by Rishab Shetty. Tourist Family comes from first-time Tamil filmmaker Abishan Jeevinth, Mahavatar Narsimha is a multilingual animated feature, and Sister Midnight is a Hindi-language UK-India co-production featuring Radhika Apte.
Oscars list eligibility rules and 98th Academy Awards criteria
The Academy explains that general entry contenders must release in a commercial cinema in at least one of six United States metropolitan areas between 1 January 2025 and 31 December 2025. Each qualifying title needs a continuous seven-day theatrical run in the same venue, with a minimum running time exceeding 40 minutes.
The 98th Academy Awards Best Picture race includes major Hollywood franchises alongside the Indian films on the Oscars list. Large-scale titles such as Avatar: Fire and Ash, The Conjuring: Last Rites, Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, Superman and Wicked: For Good sit in the same broad pool of 201 qualifying Best Picture hopefuls.

Anupam Kher reaction to Oscars list recognition
Among the Indian films on the Oscars list, Tanvi the Great has drawn special attention because Anupam Kher both directed and acted in the project. After learning that the film is eligible for consideration, Anupam Kher shared an emotional note reflecting on the journey.
Expressing gratitude for Tanvi the Great entering the Oscars list, Anupam wrote that the acknowledgement already feels like a major result for the team behind the film, even before any potential nomination or win at the 98th Academy Awards.
"Oscar…. Best film….shortlist…. Tanvi The Great!!! Every year thousands of films from all over the world are sent for the most prestigious film awards #OSCARS! Millions of people in the movie industry work very hard to get that initial nod and appreciation by the @theacademy!"
He continued by describing what inclusion on the Oscars list means for Tanvi the Great and the crew that supported the production, stressing how the recognition places the title within a very select global company of feature films assessed by the Academy.
