Main Vaapas Aaunga: Diljit's Film Gets Bigger In Week 2 As Early Morning Shows Added Amid Audience Demand

Imtiaz Ali’s Main Vaapas Aaunga is finding its audience the old-fashioned way: through word-of-mouth. After a modest start following its theatrical release on 12 June, the film has seen exhibitors add shows in several markets during its second week, a sign that audience interest is building beyond opening-weekend curiosity.

The film, led by Diljit Dosanjh, Naseeruddin Shah, Sharvari and Vedang Raina, has been described as a Partition drama rooted in love, loss and belonging. Its steady rise is notable because it comes at a time when new releases have entered cinemas, increasing competition for screens and prime show slots.

According to exhibitors and distributors, the film’s occupancy has improved across the week, prompting theatres to increase programming. Bengaluru has added an early morning 6:50 AM show, while late-night screenings are being discussed in other cities where demand remains strong. Such additions are usually made when advance sales and walk-ins justify extra capacity.

PVR INOX Limited has indicated that the film’s trajectory is more important than its opening number. Gautam Dutta, CEO – Revenue and Operations, PVR INOX Limited, said the chain is tracking the shape of the film’s growth closely, especially because it has improved steadily through the week.

“What we're tracking closely with Main Vaapas Aaunga is the shape of its trajectory, not just the topline box office number. The film has grown steadily through the week, which is exactly the kind of trend exhibitors like to see, as it reflects genuine and sustained audience interest rather than a front-loaded opening,” Dutta said.

He added that the film’s momentum appears to be driven by Imtiaz Ali’s storytelling, Naseeruddin Shah’s performance and A.R. Rahman’s score rather than promotional hype. He also called the trend “a rare and encouraging sign” for a niche, content-driven Partition drama competing with newer releases.

Exhibitors cite strong word-of-mouth

Cinépolis India has also expanded shows for the film. Devang Sampat, Managing Director of Cinépolis, said the chain, which operates 497 screens across India, increased shows by 30% from Friday to Saturday because of rising demand and better occupancies nationwide.

In West Bengal, exhibitor and distributor Satadeep Saha described the film’s performance as a “massive turnaround” in collections. He said the film moved from 24 shows on Friday to more than 50 shows, with over 75 shows planned for Sunday, reflecting a sharp increase in demand across the circuit.

Hyderabad’s Allu Cineplex, owned by Allu Arjun, has also added screenings. Bobby, Senior Manager at Allu Cineplex LLP, called the response a “big success” and said the property played 13 shows in the previous week against an original programming plan of seven shows.

In the Delhi-UP circuit, leading exhibitor Brijesh Tandon said the film had a slow opening but began picking up well after that. He said theatres have increased shows and added new auditoriums and properties in response to audience demand, with viewers “genuinely enjoying” the film.

Central India numbers point to a slow-burn run

Distributor Aditya Chowksey shared detailed figures from the CI and CP circuits, pointing to a major jump after the opening day. In the Central India circuit, the first Friday collection was ₹1.64 lakh, while the first week closed at ₹25 lakh, more than 15 times the opening-day number.

In the CP circuit, the first Friday stood at ₹2.30 lakh and the first week closed at ₹26 lakh, more than 11 times the Day 1 number. Chowksey said the second Friday was stronger than the first Friday in both regions, with CI collecting ₹5 lakh and CP collecting ₹3.63 lakh.

He added that cinemas have increased shows on public demand, while Velocity Indore, H2M Washim and JCM Ambikapur were added on the Saturday morning of the second week. These additions suggest the film is reaching newer pockets after its initial release phase.

Ritesh Arora, Programming Head at Movie Max, said the film witnessed an “impressive turnaround” during weekdays after a slow start. He said the momentum continued into the weekend, with some shows going houseful and additional screenings being introduced to meet demand.

For a film like Main Vaapas Aaunga, this pattern matters. Big-star commercial releases often depend on advance booking and opening-weekend numbers. Content-led films, especially emotional dramas, can take longer to gather audience confidence. When weekday collections remain stable or improve, exhibitors tend to treat that as a stronger indicator of staying power.

The film also benefits from the creative combination behind it. Imtiaz Ali has long explored longing, memory and emotional journeys in his cinema. With A.R. Rahman’s music and Naseeruddin Shah among the principal performers, Main Vaapas Aaunga appears to be drawing viewers who respond to mood, performance and storytelling over spectacle.

Produced by Applause Entertainment and Birla Studios, along with Mohit Choudhary and Shibasish Sarkar of Window Seat Films, Main Vaapas Aaunga continues its theatrical run with expanded shows in key markets. Its second-week growth will now decide whether the film can convert strong appreciation into a longer box office journey.
