Munna Bhai 3 Finally Happening? Rajkumar Hirani Confirms New Film, Shares Exciting Script Update

Rajkumar Hirani has brought the Munna Bhai conversation back to life by confirming that a new film in the franchise is being developed. The update is significant for Hindi film fans because Sanjay Dutt’s Munna and Arshad Warsi’s Circuit have not returned to cinemas together since Lage Raho Munna Bhai in 2006.

Rajkumar Hirani confirms new Munna Bhai film development

The filmmaker said the team is working on scripts for the next Munna Bhai film, though he did not announce a title, cast confirmation, release window or shooting schedule. His comments have also clarified why the much-discussed Munna Bhai Chale America, once teased to fans, never became a full-fledged film.

Rajkumar Hirani explains what happened to Munna Bhai Chale America

Hirani spoke about the franchise while promoting his upcoming OTT series Pritam Pedro. During a conversation with NDTV, he said the Munna Bhai Chale America teaser was made at a stage when the team was still writing the film. The idea had shown Munna and Circuit preparing to travel to the United States and learning English, a comic setup that quickly caught public attention.

However, the film did not move ahead because the script was never completed to the team’s satisfaction. Hirani said, “That trailer was made very early. We were still writing. That time Vinod was making a film so he wanted to make the trailer of the forthcoming film. We were still scripting, so we made the trailer saying Munna and Circuit will be going to America. So what could they do? So they learn English. We made something on that. But that script we could never finish. We are still working on some scripts.”

The statement is important because it separates the old America-based concept from the current development. Hirani has not said that Munna Bhai Chale America is being revived in the same form. Instead, the team appears to be searching for a story strong enough to justify bringing the franchise back after a long gap.

That caution is understandable. The first two films built their popularity on more than catchphrases and comedy. Munna Bhai M.B.B.S. used a hospital setting to tell a story about compassion and dignity. Lage Raho Munna Bhai turned Gandhigiri into a widely recognised pop-culture phrase. A third film would carry the pressure of matching that emotional connect.

Why Munna and Circuit still matter to Bollywood fans

The excitement around a possible third film is tied to the chemistry between Sanjay Dutt and Arshad Warsi. Munna’s rough-edged warmth and Circuit’s loyal comic energy made them one of modern Hindi cinema’s most loved screen pairs. Their relationship gave the films their humour, but also much of their heart.

Arshad Warsi recalled the scale of the franchise’s popularity during the shoot of Lage Raho Munna Bhai at Marine Drive in Mumbai. According to him, the location became packed with people, causing chaos, traffic jams and police movement around the shoot. At first, he assumed the crowd had gathered because of Sanjay Dutt’s stardom.

He said, “I remember we were shooting in town, Sanju and I, and the entire place was jam-packed. It was Marine Drive. There was chaos, traffic jam, cops all around, pushing, pulling, roads blocked, mayhem. Sanju and I were standing outside and looking at this chaos. I was thinking this is what is called stardom. Obviously it was for Sanju. They have not come for me.”

Hirani added that the scene was from Lage Raho Munna Bhai and that more than a lakh people had gathered, forcing the team to stop filming. Warsi said Sanjay Dutt himself told him that the crowd was there because Munna and Circuit were standing together, not just because of one actor.

That memory explains why every update about the franchise travels quickly among fans. The characters have remained familiar even without a new film for years. Dialogues, scenes and the emotional tone of the two films continue to circulate on television, streaming platforms and social media.

Pritam Pedro puts Hirani in a new OTT space

Hirani’s Munna Bhai update came during a discussion about Pritam Pedro, his debut as a producer in the streaming space. The coming-of-age dramedy is directed by Avinash Arun and features Arshad Warsi along with Vir Hirani, Rajkumar Hirani’s son, who begins his acting journey with the project.

Hirani said Vir had earlier been interested in direction and had made short films during school. He later told his father that he wanted to act. Hirani said he tried to discourage him at first, before Vir reminded him of the message of 3 Idiots about choosing work that brings joy.

The filmmaker also said he did not want to create a direct launch vehicle for his son. According to Hirani, Vir independently reached out to Avinash Arun after reading the Pritam Pedro script. Avinash said Vir auditioned without informing anyone and won the role through the process.

Hirani shared that Vir recorded multiple scenes from the script and sent them to Avinash. The director said he had also watched Vir perform on stage and had been impressed by his work. The project, therefore, gives Hirani a new streaming chapter while keeping his long association with Arshad Warsi alive.

For audiences, though, the larger headline remains the possible return of Munna Bhai. Hirani’s confirmation does not mean the film is ready to roll, but it does show that the franchise is active again at the writing stage. After years of rumours and false starts, fans finally have a credible update from the filmmaker himself.
