The cheque bounce case dates back to 2012, when Rajpal Yadav had reportedly borrowed ₹5 crore from M/s Murali Projects Pvt Ltd to finance his directorial venture Ata Pata Laapata. The film failed to perform at the box office, resulting in significant financial losses. Over the years, accumulated interest, penalties, and unpaid dues allegedly increased the total liability to nearly ₹9 crore.
In an attempt to clear the outstanding amount, the actor issued several cheques to the lender. However, the cheques were reportedly dishonoured, leading to criminal proceedings being initiated under the provisions of the Negotiable Instruments Act.
According to reports, the Delhi High Court granted Rajpal Yadav interim bail on Monday (Feb 16), allowing the actor temporary relief until March 18.

In a conversation with Mumbai Mirror, Bhaskar Upadhyay, lawyer of Rajpal Yadav, said that getting bail was "not easy." He further alleged that there was "malicious intent" behind the complainant's actions, claiming the matter was not just about money but about seeing the actor behind bars.
"If it was only about money, they could have taken the security. But there was a malicious intent. The complainant said that 'We don't want this and just kindly execute the decree by sending him in jail'. This was categorically said by the complainants. If it was the issue of a money only then they must have taken the surety. He had given his original property documents. He surrendered it before the court stating the value of my property is more than 40 crores, (sic)" the advocate was quoted as saying.
The lawyer said that a portion of the pending payment has already been settled, adding that ₹2.5 crore has been arranged so far against the total outstanding amount. He said the actor is making sincere efforts to fulfil his financial obligations.
Addressing industry buzz, the counsel also hinted that a few well-wishers from the film fraternity have stepped in to extend support during this challenging phase.
