Ranveer Faces Legal Action For Mimicking Rishab Shetty's Daiva Scene From Kantara; FIR Filed In Bengaluru

A Bengaluru court has taken cognisance of a private complaint against actor Ranveer Singh over an IFFI closing ceremony act. The petitioner alleges the performance mocked Chavundi Daiva and related Bhoota Kola rituals, seeking a formal FIR under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. The case lists next hearing for April, with investigation directed by police.

Actor Ranveer Singh is facing a private criminal complaint in Bengaluru, where a petitioner has alleged that a stage act at the International Film Festival of India hurt religious sentiments and insulted a worship tradition linked to Coastal Karnataka. The matter has already moved into the judicial process. The 1st Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court in Bengaluru has taken cognisance and listed the case for hearing on April 8, after asking police to formally register a case under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.

Ranveer Singh complaint and alleged remarks at IFFI closing ceremony

The complaint centres on the IFFI closing ceremony held in Goa on November 28, 2025. During a stage segment, Ranveer Singh allegedly performed an act that the complainant claims mocked the Chavundi Daiva tradition, in front of actor Rishab Shetty, star of Kantara: Chapter 1.

According to the petition, Ranveer Singh is accused of crudely mimicking divine expressions linked to Panjurli and Guliga Daiva in a joking style. The complaint also states that Chavundi Daiva was described as a "female ghost" on stage, despite a request that no Daiva-related portrayal be attempted during the programme.

Ranveer Singh complaint and details shared by the petitioner

The complainant, Bengaluru-based advocate Prashanth Methal, has said in the petition that Ranveer Singh’s conduct was deliberate and malicious. Methal alleged that the performance was aimed at insulting religious faith, provoking religious feelings, and creating disharmony between different communities that revere these spirits.

Methal described Chavundi Daiva as a family deity and an important presence in Bhoota Kola rituals of Coastal Karnataka. The complaint states that Chavundi Daiva is held as a guardian spirit symbolising justice, protection and divine feminine power, and that calling the deity a ghost is deeply offensive to Hindu religious beliefs.

The private complaint reached the court on December 27. On January 23, the court instructed the High Grounds police station to file a First Information Report under Section 175(3) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and begin formal investigation into the allegations.
