Saif Ali Khan On Sara & Ibrahim Facing Scrutiny: Our Field Has Become Extremely Competitive & Less Forgiving
Saif Ali Khan said that Sara Ali Khan and Ibrahim Ali Khan are stepping into Bollywood during a far stricter phase, where audiences judge actors faster and with less patience than earlier generations, adding that preparation now matters much more, even though early choices still often depend on producers and the strong pull of the big screen.

Reflecting on how things have changed, Saif Ali Khan explained that the film industry of the 1990s allowed actors a longer rope after failures, while current performers, including Sara Ali Khan and Ibrahim Ali Khan, see careers assessed after only a few projects, making both success and missteps far more visible and harder to escape.
Saif Ali Khan Bollywood scrutiny and changing expectations for new actors
Saif Ali Khan said that when Sarzameen and Pati, Patni Aur Woh Do released, the box office response for Ibrahim Ali Khan and Sara Ali Khan arrived in a climate where even one underperforming film could shape narratives online, unlike earlier years when slower reporting and fewer platforms gave struggling actors more time to adjust.
The actor stressed that he keeps reminding Sara Ali Khan and Ibrahim Ali Khan that intense media discussion and fan commentary are now part of Bollywood scrutiny, and that every public appearance, interview or choice of script can quickly influence reputations, something Saif Ali Khan felt far less during his early films.
Saif Ali Khan Bollywood scrutiny and the role of preparation
Comparing eras, Saif Ali Khan said, "It was definitely a more forgiving time when I came, and today you need to be much more prepared than we were. But the whole concept of preparation has changed, and some actors have always done that. I remember Hrithik Roshan obviously prepared his dance and his physique and all these things before his debut. But the concept has changed, and the whole world of movies has kind of changed."
Saif Ali Khan shared that he advises Sara Ali Khan and Ibrahim Ali Khan to focus on training, but also recognises limits to their control, saying, "It's a different time, and I've said this to them also that you have to prepare, but these are also producers' calls. Sometimes it's difficult to remember what it's like when you're in your early 20s. The big screen has such a strong pull that people feel that they are ready and they want to be ready."
Saif Ali Khan Bollywood scrutiny, career slump and earlier opportunities
Looking back at his own journey, Saif Ali Khan described a difficult patch after his start in films, recalling, "I survived because there was a massive patch where nobody wanted to do those movies that I was doing. It wasn't that I was getting the best films in the world repeatedly despite not being good. There was a strong downward movement, but then there was luck. It was a simpler time; people were much more forgiving."
Saif Ali Khan spoke about his early break with Yash Chopra and the setback that followed, saying, "In my defense, it's not that I was doing particularly well or getting lots of chances. I was very lucky to get a great break in a movie Yash Chopra ji was directing, and it was a huge privilege. The film didn't do well, and then I kind of went into a slump, but Yeh Dillagi brought me back; people liked me, and it was a two-hero film with Akshay Kumar."
He said that gradual progress continued through a handful of chances, adding, "So, it's not that I was doing particularly well or getting lots of chances. I got a little bit of opportunities along the way for working quite hard and putting everything into it. They got me a little bit of reward with films like Main Khiladi Tu Anari, and I slowly kind of made my way into things."
Saif Ali Khan summed up the pressure on current performers, including his children, by noting, "So it's a tough one. I think to have a successful job, you have to be very blessed in life in any field. But our field has become extremely extreme. It's always been competitive, but people are less forgiving now certainly than they were."
The contrast between Saif Ali Khan's long road to stability and the sharper Bollywood scrutiny faced by Sara Ali Khan and Ibrahim Ali Khan now sits alongside the family’s present work, with Saif Ali Khan last appearing in Kartavya, Ibrahim Ali Khan featuring in Sarzameen, and Sara Ali Khan’s Pati, Patni Aur Woh Do releasing last month but not drawing major box office numbers, while the family also includes Saif Ali Khan’s sons Taimur and Jeh with Kareena Kapoor, after Saif Ali Khan’s earlier marriage to Amrita Singh.
