Taapsee Pannu On Carving Her Own Space In Cinema As Assi Arrives: “It Has Been A Very Hard Battle.”
When Taapsee Pannu looks back at her filmography today, it reads like a remarkable journey of risk, resilience and reinvention. From socially resonant dramas like Pink and Mulk to thrillers such as Haseen Dillruba, and sports biographical drama Saand Ki Aankh, the actor has steadily built a reputation for backing stories that challenge conventions. With her new film Assi now arriving, the conversation once again turns to the distinct identity she has carved in the industry.

For many audiences, a film starring Pannu already carries a certain expectation of layered characters, thought-provoking narratives and strong performances. Talking about how challenging it is to build a filmography that becomes synonymous with one's name she said, "A lot." Looking back, Pannu says there was no carefully designed blueprint guiding her choices. When she began, the options themselves were limited. "In the beginning, you have few options, and you choose the one that suits you best. And then something clicked, because of which more windows and doors were opened. And then you eventually found your calling. After doing so many films, I gradually understood that I am enjoying making such films. And the audience is enjoying watching it. And ideologically, I don't have a battle in me while doing these films or characters. I never thought of this as a career for me. So for me, it was not like I am going to approach the film industry like this, that I will first make such films, then I will make such films. I have never made that path."
Pannu says she learned the craft and the industry simultaneously, navigating it step by step. Even today, the actor approaches her career with the same hunger she had when she began. "I learnt my job on the way. So it has been a very hard battle. I have had good, bad, worst days. Of course, like everybody. I don't think anyone has it very easy in this industry. Everyone has their own battles, victories and failures. It took me a long time. But if I look at it, I still don't feel that something has happened and now I can relax and chill. Now you've arrived. "I don't feel that feeling of having arrived so much. It still feels that I have a lot to do."
As Assi has released, it further strengthens what audiences and critics have come to associate with Taapsee Pannu over the years, a performer who can anchor a story with conviction. In the film, Pannu once again delivers a commanding performance, carrying the narrative with emotional depth and quiet strength. With Assi, Pannu not only aces yet another layered role but also reaffirms her standing as the OG protagonist, an actor audiences trust to lead stories that matter.
