Taapsee Pannu On Producing With Purpose: “I Want To Produce The Films That I Believe In”

Long before female-led films became a talking point, Taapsee Pannu was already redefining the space, consistently choosing roles that put women at the center and proving that strong storytelling can thrive beyond formula. An OG protagonist in every sense, she has steadily carved out a space where performance meets purpose, and now, she's taking that vision a step further, behind the camera.

Having turned producer with her 2022 release Blurr, Taapsee Pannu loved the experience so much that she's now eyeing more films. Yet she admits it's no easy task i.e. constantly scouting subjects and directors that truly resonate with her. "The challenge for me is to find subjects and directors on my wavelength. I am now looking at various subjects and directors. I want to produce the films that I believe in," shares Taapsee.

The filmmaking process can feel different for everyone. While talking about how Taapsee feels about owning a project and the freedom she feels with it, she shared, "Because you are the one who's going to put things together, put the team together, choose the right person to do a certain role; and that gives a sense of responsibility. But it's also extremely challenging. As an actor, you're only responsible for your Yes or No, but when you become a producer, you're responsible for getting a Yes from everybody and keeping everybody on the same page, which is far more difficult than being just an actor on set."

As she continues to balance the role of an actor and a producer, Taapsee Pannu seems firmly rooted in her intent, which is to back stories that matter and voices that resonate. After all, for someone who has consistently challenged the status quo on screen, shaping narratives from behind the scenes feels like the powerful move in a career defined by conviction and clarity. Taapsee will next be seen in an upcoming action-thriller, Gandhari, where she will step into the role of a fierce mother at the heart of an emotionally charged, high-stakes narrative exploring the bond between a parent and child, with a mix of raw action and emotional depth.
