The film revisits the 1971 Indo-Pakistan war and places Varun Dhawan in uniform, while early buzz focuses on both the music and the emotional depth promised by the story. Border 2 features Varun Dhawan as Colonel Hoshiar Singh Dahiya PVC, who led troops with firm bravery during the 1971 Indo-Pakistan war. Colonel Hoshiar Singh Dahiya received the Param Vir Chakra, India’s highest military honour, for that leadership, and the film builds its central narrative around this decorated figure.

Discussing Border 2 and co-star Sunny Deol, Varun Dhawan shared views on collective heroism in wartime. Varun Dhawan wrote, "A war can never be won by an individual, it takes all forces to come together. In #border2 we have the army, navy and airforce together oh ya and also the one man army Sunny Deol."

Music has emerged as a major talking point for Border 2, especially the track Ghar Kab Aaoge. The song, featuring Varun Dhawan, is trending online after the earlier popularity of Bijuria from Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari, giving Varun Dhawan back-to-back musical hits with listeners.
