Filmmaker Karan Johar has explained the sudden clean-up of his Instagram following list, which had sparked breakup rumours with several Bollywood stars. Karan said the move is a personal "digital detox" aimed at limiting time on social media, not a result of any disputes.

Addressing the online chatter directly, Karan posted a note on Instagram stressing that the change was not personal or targeted at any particular celebrity. The director-producer said it was about conserving energy and attention, and urged people not to treat it like a major controversy.

"It's a DIGITAL DETOX!!!! Am unfollowing everyone to reduce my time and energy spent on the gram!!! This can't be national news for god's sake...please clickbait something else! This is irrelevant!" he wrote. The message aimed to stop speculation about fallouts within Karan's social circle.

Before Karan shared this note, users had noticed that many well-known actors had vanished from the filmmaker’s following list. Names reported as unfollowed included Kareena Kapoor Khan, Malaika Arora, Alia Bhatt, Varun Dhawan, Sidharth Malhotra, Kartik Aaryan, Ananya Panday and Manish Malhotra, among others, apart from Shah Rukh Khan.

The pattern also drew attention because Priyanka Chopra still appeared on Karan’s following list, which added more fuel to online debate. At one stage during the clean-up, Karan’s account showed he was following only 78 profiles, even though more than 17 million users follow Karan on the platform.

While conversations continued about the Instagram move, Karan’s professional slate remained active. Karan recently produced Chand Mera Dil, starring Lakshya and Ananya Panday. The film received mixed critical response and recorded a modest box office performance, according to trade discussions.

Karan is also moving ahead with new work, including Naagzilla with Kartik Aaryan in the lead role. The filmmaker’s explanation suggests the Instagram decision relates only to personal digital habits, while professional relationships and upcoming projects continue as planned.
