Vaarun Bhagat, who has worked in several hit web series and shows, shared his two cents on OTT censorship. He expressed his displeasure over the obscene content that is available on certain streaming platforms.
OTT Censorship: Union Minister For Information and Broadcasting Anurag Thakur has expressed his displeasure over the rapid rise of obscene and abusive content on OTT platforms. He mentioned that the Central government has taken note of the increasing complaints against such content on streaming platforms, adding that strict action will be taken against objectionable content.
Anurag Thakur made it clear that 'abusive language in the garb of creativity will not be tolerated', indicating that government will change rules governing the OTT platforms, if the need arises.
Filmibeat caught up with talented actor Vaarun Bhagat, who has worked in several critically acclaimed shows on the web. Echoing Anurag Thakur's thoughts, the Undekhi 2 actor stated that he understands the I&B Minister's point of view as the latter has to represent the country.
The Inside Edge star added that there are a few apps who are promoting and circulating sleezy content in the name of creativity. He also stated examples of shows like Gullak and Rocket Boys, which have added significance to society through storytelling. Citing Rocket Boys' success, Vaarun said that the web series showcased how India made developments in the field of science after independence.
"Look, I would say that Anurag Thakur has a lot of responsibility. There are a few apps which are creating objectionable content. Just because sex sells, they have the notion- 'sex daaldo bharke. Kahani ka naa ser hai na per hai'. I understand his point of view. He has a job where he has to represent us. He is talking about censorship, mentioning that one cannot do anything in the garb of creativity. I don't want to oppose what he said. I get what he is saying. However, there are several shows like Gullak or Rocket Boys, which deserve all the recognition. Such shows have a feel-good feeling. Rocket Boys is not only a great show but an important show to understand the history of India. It is important for people to know where we stood in the field of science before and after Independence," Vaarun told Filmibeat in an exclusive conversation.
