While fans are excited about the premiere of the second season on September 27 on Netflix, let's take a look at the recap and spoilers of the first installment.
GYEONGSEONG CREATURE SEASON 1 RECAP AND SPOILERS
The Netflix original K-drama Gyeongseong Creature made its debut on December 22, 2023, with the release of seven episodes. Two weeks later, on January 5, 2024, the remaining three episodes of the first season were made available to viewers.
The horror K-drama follows the story of Jang Tae-sang, whose life is upended when he begins investigating a missing person case. During his search, he crosses paths with Chae-ok, a detective also searching for a missing individual. As they work together, Tae-sang and Chae-ok must confront the dark secrets of their past-both figuratively and, at times, literally.
Gyeongseong Creature begins by establishing a chilling narrative in its first episode, referencing real-life war crimes while introducing a mysterious organism discovered by Japanese soldiers. This organism, named "Najin," had the terrifying ability to turn humans into monstrous, rage-filled beings. Lieutenant Kato and Ichiro capitalized on this discovery, using the Najin to fuel their secret experiments at Ongseong Hospital in Gyeongseong. Their goal was to engineer the ultimate weapon for warfare. Although their initial lab was destroyed during the final days of the war, they resumed their sinister work in Gyeongseong. The first season of Gyeongseong Creature is largely centered within Ongseong Hospital, where Chae-ok and her father search for answers regarding her missing mother.
As the season progresses, it's revealed that Lady Maeda, portrayed by Claudia Kim, was the mastermind behind the hospital's operations. Not only was she financially backing Kato and Ichiro's experiments, but she was also fully aware of their ambitions. Lady Maeda used the hospital as a means to rid herself of enemies, including her husband Commissioner Ishikawa's lover, Myeong-ja. It is also suggested that Lady Maeda had a hand in the abduction and imprisonment of Chae-ok's mother, though the details of their connection remain unclear.
Lady Maeda's exact motivations for supporting the Najin research are left ambiguous. While she might have been interested in developing weapons for the war, there also seems to be a personal hunger for power driving her actions. Myeong-ja, Ishikawa's mistress, met a grim fate after Lady Maeda discovered she was pregnant. Without her husband's knowledge, Maeda had Myeong-ja kidnapped and taken to Ongseong Hospital, setting off a chain of events that would shape the course of the show. The Chief of Police made a deal with Jang Tae-sang, the well-connected pawn shop owner, enlisting him to uncover what had happened to Myeong-ja.
As the season unfolds, we learn that Myeong-ja became one of the many victims subjected to the horrifying Najin experiments. While she did not fully transform into a monstrous creature like Chae-ok's mother, Myeong-ja became a ferocious, zombie-like figure. Her tragic story ended with her death during childbirth, though her baby survived. One of the unresolved mysteries from the season is who drank the contaminated water at the end of episode 7, setting up intrigue for future episodes.
HERE'S WHAT HAPPENED IN GYEONGSEONG CREATURE SEASON 1 CLIMAX
In the climax of season 1, Chae-ok faces a brutal attack from the creature, which turns out to be her mother. In a heart-wrenching scene, Chae-ok shields Tae-sang from the creature, resulting in her chest being pierced by one of its tentacles. Her tragic death in Tae-sang's arms is made even more painful by the fact that her attacker was her own mother. However, in a surprising turn, the creature recognizes Chae-ok as her daughter and transfers the Najin organism into her, reviving her just before the season ends, leaving viewers with Chae-ok opening her eyes in a mysterious state.
This shocking conclusion sets the stage for even more twists and revelations in the upcoming season of Gyeongseong Creature.
