While fans are excited about the premiere of the second season on October 25 on Netflix, let's take a look at the recap and spoilers of the first installment.
HELLBOUND SEASON 1 RECAP AND SPOILERS
The Netflix original K-drama Hellbound made its debut on November 19, 2021, and broke the record set by Squid Games which premiered two months prior by becoming the world's most-watched Netflix series. Based on director Yeon Sang-ho's webtoon of the same name, Hellbound is set in a futuristic 2022 where supernatural entities emerge without warning, condemning individuals to Hell, sparking widespread fear and chaos.
The initial episodes of Hellbound present a cult-like organization called "The New Truth." This group, once headed by Jung Jin-Soo (originally portrayed by Yoo Ah-In but now played by Kim Sung-Cheol following a drug controversy), plays a pivotal role in the unfolding narrative. Jin-Soo preaches about God's will, gathering followers in discreet meetings. According to his teachings, sinners are visited by a supernatural being-an ominous floating head-who decrees their death and imminent damnation. This head appears to inform individuals of the exact moment they'll be sent to hell.
The show opens with a chilling demonstration of this belief. In a café, a man glances nervously at his phone, fully conscious of the impending event. Out of nowhere, massive ape-like creatures storm into the café and violently drag him away. Moments later, these beings enact a gruesome ritual, placing their hands over him, emitting a blinding white light that reduces him to ashes, leaving only charred bones.
The event shocks everyone present, including a group of teenagers who had been watching a video of Jin-Soo discussing "The New Truth" but were skeptical until they witnessed the terrifying spectacle firsthand. As Hellbound progresses, the mystery deepens.
HERE'S WHAT HAPPENED IN HELLBOUND SEASON 1 CLIMAX
By the end of Season 1, we see Hye-Jin in a cab driven by a man who seems to know more than he lets on, giving off an eerie vibe. Fans speculate that the driver could be Kyung-Hun, possibly in disguise, as he remains absent from the last three episodes, hinting at his return in Season 2.
Meanwhile, Jung-Ja inexplicably resurrects in a museum, leaving viewers puzzled about the nature of her return. In the Season 2 trailer, we also learn that Jin-Soo is resurrected. This raises questions about whether those who come back were truly sinners. Could they be something more than human now? The second season is likely to explore this battle between the resurrected, delving deeper into what it means to be 'Hellbound'.
