'IC 814' Web Series Row: Vijay Varma starrinng IC 814 has been under the limelight for all the wrong reasons ever since it was released. Now, amid the name changing row, the web series fell for another controversy which led the Netflix India head being summoned by the government. According to the reports, after recieving massive backlash online, Monika Shergill, who leads the streaming platform in India, was summoned by the Information and Broadcasting ministry before Tuesday, September 3rd.

Why Is Netflix India Head Summoned By IB For IC 814?

The Information and Broadcasting Ministry summoned Monika Shergill after thousands of social media users bashed the makers of IC 814 for changing the names of hijackers in the movie to 'Bhola' and 'Shankar' which is the name of a Hindu god. However, originally the hijacking of the Indian Airlines flight was done by the people of a certain community in Pakistan-based terror group Harkat-ul-Mujahideen. This act by the makers sparked outrage on social media for changing the names into Hindu codenames that hurt the religious sentiments of many.

The webseries is based on the real-life incident, The Kandahar Hijack, and tells the story of chilling experience of passsengers and crew members in the IC 814 flight after the plan was hijacked and taken to the Taliban-controlled area in Kandahar, Afghanistan. Later, Atal Bihari Vajpayee, then Prime Minister, had to release three dreaded terrorists from Indian prison in order to secure the life of the passengers and crew.

The film stars Vijay Varma as Captain Devi Sharan, Dia Mirza, Kumud Mishra, Pankaj Kapur, Manoj Pahwa, Amrita Puri, Patralekha, among others. Helmed by Anubhav Sinha, the Netflix series was released on August 29. The series has been adapted from the book, 'Flight Into Fear: The Captain's Story' which is written by Devi Sharan himself and journalist Srinjoy Chowdhury.
