In Mumbai Twenty-five-year-old Sheena Bora, an ambitious executive working for Mumbai Metro One, vanished without a trace on April 24, 2012. She was never seen again.
Following an extensive investigation, the Mumbai police apprehended Indrani Mukerjea, a former media executive and Sheena's mother, along with her second husband, Peter Mukerjea, and their driver, Shyamvar Rai, in August 2015. They faced charges of abduction, murder, and the disposal of Sheena Bora's body.
The arrest followed months of monitoring Indrani, which began after a tip-off and Rai's prior apprehension for illegal possession of weapons.
The details of Sheena Bora's murder emerged during interrogation. Allegedly, she was strangled to death in a car by Indrani, her driver Shyamvar Rai, and her ex-husband Sanjeev Khanna in April 2012.
During questioning, Khanna and Rai confessed to the crime, implicating Indrani. However, she vehemently denied the accusations, insisting that Sheena was alive and residing in the United States.
Rai's interrogation provided further details, revealing a meticulously planned murder. According to his account, the trio disposed of Sheena's body in the village of Gagode, Maharashtra, after burning it.
The motive behind the murder, as revealed during the trial, stemmed from financial disputes and Indrani's disapproval of Sheena's relationship with her stepbrother Rahul. The involvement of Peter Mukerjea suggested a complex familial dynamic fraught with jealousy and conflicts.
Indrani Mukerjea, while in custody for her daughter's murder, published a memoir titled "Unbroken: The Untold Story," portraying Sheena Bora as a sister rather than a daughter.
