What Are Current Gaps In Female Representation In Indian Entertainment? Prime Video Decodes In O Womaniya
The 2023 O Womaniya! report reveals key insights into female representation in the Indian entertainment sector, covering production roles, marketing visibility, and leadership positions. It highlights the need for ongoing efforts to improve gender equality across the industry.

The latest O Womaniya! report, spearheaded by Prime Video in conjunction with Ormax Media and Film Companion Studios, offers a comprehensive analysis of female representation within the Indian entertainment sector. It scrutinizes the involvement of women across various facets such as production roles, leadership positions within corporations, and visibility in marketing efforts. This year's study, which examined 169 films and series across nine Indian languages, reveals critical insights into both progress and shortcomings in these areas.
One of the groundbreaking elements introduced in this year's study is the Gender Equality Toolkit. This innovative measure assesses the extent of female agency in films and series, determining if women are central to their narratives or marginalized in favor of male perspectives. Surprisingly, only 31% of the titles evaluated passed this test, although streaming series outperformed with 45% meeting the criteria. It was also noted that projects led by female commissioners were more likely to pass, with a success rate of 48%. The traditional Bechdel Test was also employed, uncovering that nearly half of the titles did not meet these criteria, highlighting a significant area for improvement.
In the creative realm, the representation of women in head of department (HOD) positions remains low, with only 15% of such roles across direction, cinematography, editing, writing, and production design being occupied by women. However, streaming platforms show a more promising trend, with over 20% of HOD roles in both films and series held by females. Editing emerged as the leading department for female representation, particularly in streaming content, where over 18% of positions were filled by women.

Despite some advancements in the industry, the marketing sector still shows women with only 29% of the dialogue in trailers. While there has been a slight increase in this figure over the past two years, significant growth is still needed. Streaming films, notably, appear more inclined to feature women prominently in promotional materials. Titles such as Made in Heaven Season 2 and Boo, among others, were highlighted for giving more voice to female characters in their trailers.
The study also sheds light on corporate leadership within the media and entertainment (M&E) sector, revealing that women hold a mere 12% of Director/CXO positions across leading firms in India, marking a slight decrease from the previous year. This statistic underscores the need for continued efforts to enhance female representation at the highest levels of industry leadership.

Stuti Ramachandra, Prime Video's Director & Head of Production, International Originals, India, emphasized the critical role of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) in fostering a transformative environment. "At Prime Video, we firmly believe that Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) is not just good to have — it is essential to driving meaningful change. We have worked intentionally and persistently to build a diverse, inclusive, and equitable ecosystem, creating more opportunities for women, both in production and within our organization. In a collaborative industry such as ours, the true impact of DEI can only be realized when it is embraced across the board, with each of us committing to fostering an environment where women are seen, heard, and truly valued," she stated.
Shailesh Kapoor, Founder & CEO of Ormax Media, highlighted the progress made with each O Womaniya! report, particularly praising the introduction of the Gender Equality Toolkit for its action-oriented approach to enhancing female representation. Anupama Chopra, a renowned film critic and producer, also voiced her appreciation for the initiative, stressing the significance of every effort made towards gender inclusivity within the industry.
In conclusion, the O Womaniya! 2024 report not only identifies existing gaps in female representation across Indian entertainment but also celebrates the strides made towards gender equity. It serves as a call to action for the industry to not only continue these efforts but to accelerate them, ensuring a future where opportunities are determined by skill and talent, irrespective of gender.
