Ghanchakkar Movie Review: Too absurd and insane

Rating:
2.0/5
Last time, we saw Vidya Balan and Emraan Hashmi getting really dirty in their flick The Dirty Picture, and this time, they have vowed to drive their fans go crazy. Their latest film Ghanchakkar, directed by Rajkumar Gupta is a "quirky" comedy involving a bank heist, memory loss and a loud Punjabi housewife. Picking the unique concept of thriller comedy, Ghanchakkar impresses you until a point, when you feel that things are going out-of-control and irritating.

Story
When Sanju (Emraan Hashmi), a suave, master safe cracker wants to retire from a career in crime, he decides to team up with two dangerous criminals to commit one last heist. Sanju is given the task of hiding the money till things cool down and the booty can be split. Three months later, the associates return to collect their share of the loot, but Sanju refuses to even recognise them! They realise that he met with an accident and is suffering from strong amnesia, and decide to stay with Sanju and his wife Neetu (Vidya Balan) until Sanju remembers where he hid the money.

Ghanchakkar

Ghanchakkar

The story isn't quite compelling and indeed lacks meat. Ghanchakkar suffers a lot in the second half, and gets overboard and repetitive at times. The film boasts of some genuine humour and especially, Vidya's insane behaviour at times, but hardly makes any difference to save the fate of the movie.

Emraan Hashmi's Performance

Emraan Hashmi's Performance

We still don't understand, even after delivering some memorable performances, why Emraan Hashmi is always termed as an underrated actor? Today, Hashmi is not just 'only a good-looking serial kisser', but much more than that. Hashmi gets his character right. He effortlessly slips into the character and crafts Sanjay's predicaments - anger, frustration and suspicions, with immense ease.

Vidya Balan's Performance

Vidya Balan's Performance

Vidya Balan went dirty in The Dirty Picture, pregnant in Kahaani, and this time she is going crazy. Like always, you just cannot afford to ignore Vidya and her crazy antics. She steals the show with absurd mannerisms and weird dressing sense.

Rajkumar Gupta

Rajkumar Gupta

Ghanchakkar's director Rajkumar Gupta had earlier made films like Aamir, No One Killed Jessica, those really fetched well at the Box Office.

Final Verdict

Final Verdict

Ghanchakkar is certainly not the best, but yes, if you are a true Vidya Balan fan, you may take the risk and grab a show ticket at the theatre, else just give it a miss.
