Raja Natwarlal Movie Review: Insanely Predictable

Rating:
2.0/5

Serial Kisser is back in town baby! After experimenting with different genre of movies Emraan Hashmi is back to what he does best, a roadside romeo with a passion for kissing. He is pairing up with Pakistani actress Humaima Malik in this movie which is directed by Kunal Deshmukh.

Plot:

Raja Natwarlal is a typical story about a con man, a tried and test formula in Bollywood but the only kahani mein twist would be the fact that this con man is trying to dupe a bigger con man for a hidden motive. The story starts with two friends Raja (Emraan Hashmi) and Raghav (Deepak Tijori), petty crooks in the city of Mumbai who are capable of conning people with outrageously smart tricks. While this is their life in the day, during night time Raja goes running to his girl friend slash bar dancer, Ziya (Humaima Mailk).

The two friends are leading a happy and adventurous life till they cross paths with don Varda Yadav (Kay Kay Menon) and unintentionally lock horns with him which results in the death of Raja's brother from another mother, Raghav. Since the two were really close, his death shakes up Raja's emotions and he plans to seek the revenge of his friend's untimely departure. Raja approaches a veteran ex-con artist, Yogi (Paresh Rawal) to guide him and help take revenge and con the don. How they con Varda and do they manage to con him is what forms Raja Natwarlal movie's predictable story.

The lead hero's character Raja is often heard telling that a con man has to always be ten steps ahead of his victim; it would have been so much better had the director and makers of the film followed the same ideology too. If a lame man can figure out your plot and story line in the movie, how can you even con the villain?

With the lead protagonist being a shrewd con man, the plot has to be ten times ahead of the audience making sure that we are at the edge of our seats trying to figure out his next move. But sadly that doesn't happen and you get bored out of your mind. The sad unappealing songs of the movie don't help much either.

Coming to star cast of the movie, Paresh Rawal is an actor whose performance is worth gloating about. The timing of his dialogues and his role as the con guru is captivating. Kay Kay Menon too delivers a brilliant performance but somewhere you expect more out of this talented actor's role and you are left hanging in the middle.

Humaima Malik is pretty and a damsel in distress sorts in the movie and while her romantic escapades with the hero is cute and manages to keep us at our seats, her role feels unwanted and miss-able. The actress's overacting antics didn't help her role much either.

Coming to the hero, Emraan Hashmi, though the movie is predictable and tad bit boring, his role is worth the watch. He has improved a lot in his acting skills and has ensured to leave a big mark with his fine performance.

Positives:

Yogi and Raja's mentor-protege relationship which influences the latter's role. Yogi's dialogues and the philosophies they share of the con world are quite enthralling.

Negatives:

  • Weak screenplay, Parvez Shaikh should have come up with a smarter plot and a tad bit cleverer screenplay would have helped keep the audiences on their toes.
  • Songs are usually the high points in both Emraan and Kunal's movie but in this movie the music score has left us disappointed.

Verdict:

A watchable fare if you really have nothing much to do this weekend, but if you are looking to have a great entertaining time then you can give it a miss and watch something better.
