Dunki Review: Shah Rukh Khan-Rajkumar Hirani's Film Is Beautiful And Elegant, But Sadly Not A WOW

Dunki Review: Shah Rukh Khan made his comeback earlier this year with Pathaan which did a fantastic business at the box office. In September this year, we saw him in Jawan which went on to break many records and became a blockbuster. And now, the superstar's third release of the year, Dunki, has finally hit the big screens today. The movie is directed by Rajkumar Hirani who is known for making some amazing films. As SRK and Hirani are coming together for the first time, the expectations from Dunki are quite hight? So, is this film worth your time and money? Find out in our review below...
Dunki is about Manu (Taapsee Pannu), Balli (Anil Grover), and Buggu (Vikram Kochhar) who dream to go to London and earn there, so they can give their families in India a better life. Hardy (Shah Rukh Khan), an army officer enters their lives and falls in love with Manu. Now, to fulfil Manu's wish, he can go to any extent. But, they don't get visa and later they take the Dunki route (illegal route to London). What happens with them in this journey forms the rest of the story...
The movie is written by Abhijat Joshi, Rajkumar Hirani, and Kanika Dhillon. Hirani has also directed the film. While the makers surely had a great concept in hand, the movie doesn't reach the expectations that we had from it. It is clearly not one of the best works of Rajkumar Hirani. When Dunki was announced everyone was very excited about it because SRK and Hirani have teamed up for the first time. So, it was expected that the movie will create a magic on the big screens.
There are some scenes that have the Hirani touch and make us laugh out loud. The sequence where all the characters go for their IELTS exams is simply hilarious and you will surely laugh out loud. But, apart from laughter, Hirani's movies connect us emotionally, and here that emotional connect is missing.
Dunki starts on a dull note, but picks up a few minutes before the interval. In the second half also while some scenes are very good, some just don't connect with us. One thing that stands out here is that while Hirani's movies always have a decent role and screen time for female leads, here Manu is undoubtedly the strongest female lead the filmmaker has ever had. In fact, at some points you will feel that Manu's character is stronger than Hardy.
So, as Manu's character is strong, Taapsee Pannu gets immense scope to perform and she does justice with the character. The actress' last few films didn't do well and she even received mixed reviews for her performance. But, Taapsee is back with a bang, and it's a treat to watch her. Clearly, she stole the show.
Shah Rukh Khan as Hardy is very good, and it's a kind of a role that he always nails it. But, after Pathaan and Jawan, audience would have surely expected a stronger role. Vikram Kochar is simply fantastic in the movie, and he will surely make you laugh. Anil Grover also leaves a mark with his performance, and Bomran Irani is good in his part, but we surely wanted to see more of him. Vicky Kaushal has a special appearence in the movie and he is just amazing. He has performed it so well that you connect with his character a lot.
When it comes to music, Pritam and Aman Pant (background score), have done a great job. All the songs are melodious especially Banda sung by Diljit Dosanjh.
Overall, Dunki is not a bad film. But, if Rajkumar Hirani is teaming up with Shah Rukh Khan everyone will expect the movie to be wow, and that's not the case here. It's a decent film that you can watch it once with your family.
