Detective Sherdil Review: Diljit Dosanjh Shines In This Underwhelming Murder Mystery

Detective Sherdil, starring Diljit Dosanjh, disappoints with a weak plot and character development. Despite stylish filmmaking, it misses the essence of his musical persona.

Detective Sherdil Review: Diljit Dosanjh has become a household name, captivating audiences with his unique voice and charismatic persona. His music videos showcase a vibrant mix of traditional and modern styles. However, when this charm is translated into the film "Detective Sherdil," it loses its impact. The film, featuring Diljit as the lead, fails to capture the essence that makes him so appealing in his musical ventures.

The movie kicks off with Diljit introducing his character in a black jacket adorned with a lion's face, reminiscent of his music video style. An energetic rap song positions Sherdil as superior to famous detectives like Sherlock Holmes and Byomkesh Bakshi. Yet, Sherdil lacks seriousness and remains an ambiguous character throughout. His innocent smile and harmonica tunes are his defining traits.

Plot and Characters

The storyline revolves around the murder of Pankaj Bhatti, played by Boman Irani, on a deserted road. His driver vanishes along with Purvak, the boyfriend of Pankaj's daughter Shanti. The plot centers on a money dispute involving Pankaj's son Angad (Sumit Vyas) and wife Rajeshvari (Ratna Pathak Shah). The mystery is straightforward, lacking any real thrill or suspense.

Director Ravi Chhabriya attempts to compensate for the lackluster plot with over-stylized filmmaking techniques. The film features numerous cuts and transitions, accompanied by electronic music. Despite these efforts, the film fails to engage viewers fully. It aims for a quirky style but doesn't delve deeper than superficial embellishments.

Performance and Execution

Diljit's performance is hindered by a confused script that doesn't utilize his Punjabi humour effectively. Instead, he delivers Hindi and English dialogues without self-awareness. His voiceover adds some spark but isn't consistently used throughout the film. The focus shifts more towards solving the case rather than developing Sherdil's character.

Other actors like Boman Irani and Ratna Pathak Shah don't leave a lasting impression either. They merely follow the story's beats without adding any flair or depth to their roles. The film could have been more engaging if it had explored Diljit's musical genius alongside his detective skills.

Missed Opportunities

"Detective Sherdil" could have been more successful if it embraced Diljit's dual identity as a musician and detective. A storyline where he gathers information through his underground music scene connections in Europe would have added intrigue. His partner Natasha (Diana Penty) could have been both critical of his taste yet secretly admired him.

This approach might have captured the essence of Diljit's hit songs like "Born to Shine" or "G.O.A.T." Instead, the film leaves him distant and forgettable, unlike his vibrant musical persona that fans adore.

Ultimately, "Detective Sherdil" falls short of expectations due to its lack of focus on Diljit's strengths as an entertainer. While it attempts to blend detective work with stylized filmmaking, it doesn't fully capitalize on what makes Diljit Dosanjh a global star
