Emergency Film Review Kangana Ranaut Knocks It Out Of Park As Actor But

Rating:
3.5/5
Star Cast: Kangana Ranaut, Anupam Kher, Mahima Chaudhary, Shreyas Talpade
Director: Kangana Ranaut

Emergency Film Review: India hi Indira hai, Indira hi India hai- Indeed this dialogue holds a lot of significance as Indira Gandhi was the 'Iron Lady' of our country. If Kangana failed to deliver a strong product in her latest film, she would have received brickbats from all corners. After all, she was not only the leading lady but also the captain of the ship. The National Film-award-winning actress passed out with flying colors.

EMERGENCY STORY REVIEW

The Queen star donned multiple hats for her latest film, acing every department with ease. Miss Ranaut portrayed the vulnerability of India's only female Prime Minister on the screen. Her film delved into Indira's controversial decisions including ordering troops to march into Amritsar's Golden Temple during Operation Bluestar and imposing a national emergency that suspended basic human rights

Emergency, which was supposed to showcase the 'dark chapter of post-Indepence India', focused on different facets of Indira Gandhi's life. From being labeled as 'Goongi gudiya' to emerging as an Iron Lady, the film showed how Indira earned a special place with her leadership.

EMERGENCY ACTING REVIEW: KANGANA IS GREAT AS USUAL, MILIND SOMAN TAKES THE CAKE WITH HIS CAMEO

Give her any role and she will play it with perfection. There's a reason why Kangana Ranaut is offered author-backed roles. She once again has managed to hit the ball out of the park with her performance in Emergency. Be it acing the small nuances or catching the mannerisms of late Indira Gandhi, it is visible that she has worked hard for her role. After all, it was a role of a lifetime. The more you say about Kangana, the less it is.

Kangana's detailed attention to Indira's mannerism is a testament to her honesty towards to her craft.

Anupam Kher and Shreyas Talpade have delivered honest performances in Emergency, acting as strong pillars of the film. Who said you need a full-fledged role to leave an ever-lasting impression on the audience? Milind Soman, with his cameo appearance as Sam Manekshaw, stole the limelight. Kangana and Milind's scene was chef-kiss.

Nobody looked more convincing than Soman in the film.

Talking about another show stealer, Vishak Nair made waves with his amazing presence as Sanjay Gandhi, Indira Gandhi's son. The talented artists embodied the character, which is complex and spoiled . His politics was said to be more malevolent. I wished to see more of Mahima Chaudhry, who played Pupul Jayakar, Indira Gandhi's close confidante. She brightened up the screen with her presence as her scenes with Kangana were

EMERGENCY MOVIE REVIEW: WHAT WE LIKED? GOOD PRODUCTION, IMPRESSIVE ACTING

A film is a collective effort of all the members involved with it. Emergency scores brownie points in major departments like acting, production, direction and writing. The quality of production is impressive, which needs to be applauded.

Kangana Ranaut's brilliant performance, aided with a well-rounded supporting cast, adds as a feather on the cap of the film. It is indeed a casting coup as she has selected the best artists to play complex characters.

Who thought that a young actor would become the ultimate show-stealer in a film starring Anupam Kher, Mahima Chaudhry, Kangana and Shreyas? We are talking about Vishak Nair, who delivered a whistle-worthy performance.

EMERGENCY FILM REVIEW: WHAT WE DIDN'T LIKE?

I strongly believe that Kangana and team should have focused more on the state of Indians during the emergency period. While Indira's relationship with son Sanjay Gandhi was a heavy focus of the film, it took away the most important aspect of the film- the Emergency era, which violated basic human rights.

It is important to establish a character in order to strike a chord with the audience. While Mrs Gandhi needs no introduction, Kangana's introduction as Indira in her first scene looked pale in comparison with other characters. The first half is slow and a few scenes could be chopped off.

I clearly didn't like the mirror scene where Indira is being compared to devil. Was it needed? A big no.

While the second half is crispier, one can notice that there's a 'jump' in between the scenes. Is it due to Censor board diktat? That is something the makers can answer.

EMERGENCY DESERVES YOUR WATCH

The biographical drama keeps you invested, courtesy of the impressive second half. It's never an easy affair to make a well-crafted period drama and not ruffle a few feathers. Emergency might face criticism from showcasing the 'vulnerable and weak' side of Madam Prime Minister. Some might say that the film tried to 'white-wash' Mrs Gandhi. Art, cinema are subjective but the final output needs to be brilliant to be talked about.

Emergency is a jewel on Kangana Ranaut's crown (read career) and it deserves your watch.
