Maalik Movie Review: After the underperformance of Anurag Basu's Metro In Dino, Rajkummar Rao and Manushi Chillar starrer Maalik has finally hit the theatres today (July 11). Touted as an action thriller, the film takes audiences back to the gritty lanes of 1990 Allahabad, where ambition, violence, and power collide.

MAALIK PLOT REVIEW

Bollywood's latest gangster drama, Maalik, is set in Allahabad in 1990 and revolves around Deepak, a farmer's son played by the ever-reliable Rajkummar Rao, who dreams of a life far bigger than the humble legacy of his father.

Deepak's fiery transformation into Maalik, a feared and respected mafia leader, is the heart of the story. Rao's magnetic screen presence ensures that the character never comes across as a one-note villain. Maalik isn't a mindless criminal - he's compassionate toward his allies, fiercely loyal to those who stand by him, but shows no mercy to those who betray or oppose him. He doesn't hesitate to destroy or kill threats, making him both feared and admired.

While the plot follows a familiar gangster trajectory, the storytelling is predictable yet engaging. The film benefits tremendously from an interesting first half, which culminates in a thrilling interval point. Although the second half slows down momentarily, the narrative regains momentum with a gripping pre-climax and an emotionally charged climax that delivers a punch.

MAALIK PERFORMANCE REVIEW

What makes Maalik stand out despite its conventional storyline is Rajkummar Rao's powerhouse performance. He dives deep into the emotional and psychological layers of Deepak/Maalik-portraying his hunger for power, his inner conflicts, and his emotional turmoil with remarkable finesse. Rao's performance alone makes Maalik worth watching.

The supporting cast adds weight to the narrative. Saurabh Sachdeva delivers a menacing performance as Chandrashekhar, Maalik's chief rival. His cold, calculated persona provides a perfect foil to Deepak's fiery temperament. Bengali cinema icon Prosenjit Chatterjee plays a determined police officer assigned to bring Maalik down, and he does justice to the role with his restrained intensity.

Manushi Chhillar, cast as Maalik's wife Shalini, has a relatively limited role and doesn't get much room to make an impact in the first half. However, things change for her in the second half, and her performance is decent. On the other hand, Anshumaan Pushkar impresses in his role as Maalik's loyal friend and confidant, bringing sincerity and support to the central character.

Veteran actor Saurabh Shukla plays Dadda, a character who adds nuance and grounded wisdom to the narrative. As always, Shukla brings authenticity to the screen.

MAALIK OVERALL VERDICT

Maalik might offer nothing new in the gangster genre, but it offers enough drama, action, and emotional depth to keep you hooked. Backed by a decent first half, a gripping climax, and an exceptional performance by Rajkummar Rao, this film is an engaging ride.
